Dead in the Family Spoilers – Publishers Weekly

Well looky here.

Publishers Weekly – Dead in the Family – Charlaine Harris.

Still reeling from the deaths of her fairy cousin, Claudine, and many others in 2009’s Dead and Gone, Sookie Stackhouse struggles with paranormal politics in her entertaining if slow-moving 10th outing. When Claudine’s triplet, Claude, appears at her doorstep, Sookie reluctantly allows him to move in. The government threatens two-natures with mandatory registration, and tensions run high in the local Were pack. Then Eric’s maker, a Roman named Appius Livius Ocella, arrives without warning, bringing along Alexei Romanov, whom he rescued from the Bolsheviks and turned into a vampire. Though the action often builds too slowly, the exploration of family in its many human and undead variations is intriguing, and Harris delivers her usual mix of eccentric characters and engaging subplots. (May)

Claude is benign, so we can stop stressing about that. Amelia moves out – gay, fae stripper cousin moves in. No idea where this going…but it will most likely end with Sookie getting the crap beat out of her again.

Eric’s “brother” has a name and a background (Alexei Romanov is a historical figure, a la Bubba – I am digging on him as we speak), and we also have some dirt on what Alcide might want from Sookie.

And there’s “subplot” now? Gee I thought this series was just popcorn and fluff.

Six weeks to go and I’m getting ANTSY!

I don’t see that as Claude necessarily be benign. Sookie reluctantly lets him move in. She does value the little family that she has, but why the reluctance? Maybe she goes against the little warning bell in her head because she feels guilty about Claudine’s death. It wouldn’t be the first time she went against her gut feeling. Claude could, in fact, harbor ideas of revenge that later come to fruition.

Just in time for the Viking to save her silly ass.

    • March 15, 2010 at 3:02 pm

I see Claude less as a malevolent threat and more of a general pain in the ass. Of course she was reluctant–he’s a jerk.

      March 15, 2010 at 9:53 pm

i think shes reluctant bc she doesnt kno if Claude blames her for Claudine’s death. She problli feels responsible and lets him move in bc she feels its the least she can do. The question is, why does Claude need to move in wit her? Maybe something happens to his business

Hi, well you have one Alexei “Romanov”, which his last name was Nikolaevich cause his father had changed it. He was the last survivor of the Romanov dinasty and he died at 13 but his body was only found in 2007. He was hemophiliac. The wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexei_Nikolaevich,_Tsarevich_of_Russia

    • March 15, 2010 at 2:45 pm

At first I thought it was the earlier Alexei Romanov (b. 1629) but then re read the spoiler which clearly says “rescued from the Bolshevik’s”. So it can only be the 13 year old Romanov…who was, as you point out, a hemophiliac.

HOLY MOLY. Where on earth could CH be going with a teenage hemophiliac vampire?

      My mind is BLOWN.

      In a good way.

Not in an Alan Ball way.

And yes I am totally thinking about Jessica now, and how “she wishes she’d thought of that.”

Oh shit my brain is asploding.

        March 15, 2010 at 10:29 pm

I’m totally blown too bc a 13 yr old vampire would be hella scary!lol

Could they have waited til he was older to turn him?

I’m assuming the hemophila would have quickened the turning process…it could have been partially a mistake–or atleast a split second decision? It’s very interesting. I would imagine other vampires must have been hemophiliacs or carried mutations, its just that this case is well known. Perhaps it impacts his “talent”? Maybe something to do with Bill’s silver poisoning. Or, lessening the blood bond? Who knows…

Darn my first post did not take.   I had been under the impression that “brother in tow” was Eric’s human brother and all the drama that storyline would entail.

I am optimistic about about Claude moving in.  After Eric learns to deal with the lingering scent, he will appreciate the daytime protection minus a rival for Sookie’s affection.

Claude probably agrees to it so as to honor Claudine and Nial.  Also he is accustomed to having a sister play a major role in his life.  He becomes a little co-dependent on Sookie and hopefully he teams up with Eric to eliminate Dermott.

        I am liking the possibilities.

Ok so this is probably a way off guess, but I could see Alexei being to Eric as Hunter is to Sookie and a possible HEA could be a very weird blended family of telepaths and vamps. That would be a fun ending, however unlikely.

    March 15, 2010 at 2:48 pm

Oh boy. I have no idea what to expect anymore. No more guessing, no more speculation, I’ll just wait till May. Her reluctance with Claude is probably because she feels guilty about Claudine and has no idea how Claude feels about it. Maybe Claude is moving in because he wants to be closer to Sookie. She and Jason are his only family left (except for the lurking Dermot) so maybe he’s trying to keep together their family ties? Eh…

Sorry for the OT, but did anyone catch the new promo for the re-air of s2 last night on HBO? Maybe it’s not new, but I haven’t seen it and it is SEXY as hell! The tagline is “get sucked in” or something. It was great!

I feel wierd about her writing Alexi in- and not in a good way. It really could go either way in the end. As for Claude- I always thought he was sort of a non-character. We don’t really know if even though he has been around for a few books. We know that Amelia moves out in the spoiler chapter already released, but is Sookie that lonely that she invites him to live with her? Seems a strange choice. Plus, if we assume Eric ever comes for a sleep over does Cluade have to disappear so Eric doesn’t try to eat him? Is not goig to be around that much cause Sook lives with a fairy and it’s too much to handle? Just thinking out loud… I don’t want this to go the way of ABall and season 2.

    • March 15, 2010 at 3:51 pm

The Claude/Eric thing is what I thought of instantly! Perhaps Claude moves in because his fealty is still to Niall and with Dermot on the loose (potentially), Sookie needs protection and Claude is available during the daylight hours when Eric is not. And it sounds like Eric may be unavailable for some of the nights with Appius showing up! Maybe we’ll see the kinder, gentler (or at least minimally civil) Claude!

        March 15, 2010 at 10:32 pm

Holby, I thought the exact same thing. My hope is that Claudes moving in forces Sookie/Eric to take their rendevous to his place. CH has mentioned that we will finally see it!

        • March 16, 2010 at 3:54 am

I think this is probably right. Was wondering how Sookie was going to end up at his house…if she has a full blooded fairy living with her Eric will have to stay away.

          • March 16, 2010 at 6:05 am

I am definitely all for that!! Some all night knockin the walls down sessions..what safer place than Eric’s house? The one place Sookie is most unlikely to get beat up lol *hopefully*

[My hope is that Claudes moving in forces Sookie/Eric to take their rendevous to his place. CH has mentioned that we will finally see it!]

Mine, too. But my only worry would be if Appius and Alexei were staying at Eric’s house. I hope not…

          March 16, 2010 at 10:31 pm

Haha, that was my first thought too. How will we get Eric/Sookie nookie when a distracting smelling fairy is in the house? Well, that and that OMG! If Claude sees Eric naked and in action, he really will be the one that tries to kill Sookie in this book, because he’ll want Eric for himself, lol. I mean, sure Eric would end up killing him, but what a way to go! Lol. 😉

  6. March 15, 2010 at 4:03 pm

I already knew a bit of the history of the Romanov’s and their relationship to Rasputin. NOW it becomes clear that Rasputin’s amazing ability to stop Alexei’s bouts hemophilia was probably connected to his ability to procure Vampire blood! I do not know why this never occurred to me before, it is so obvious!

On Wikipedia, though, they have a really awesome quote from a conversation Alexei apparently had with his sister, Olga.

[Olga asked him what he liked to think about. “Oh, so many things,” the boy responded. “I enjoy the sun and the beauty of summer as long as I can. Who knows whether one of these days I shall not be prevented from doing it?”]

He already foresaw his life as a vampire!!!

    March 15, 2010 at 4:04 pm

m… My only question is HOW could Sookie will manage to has a relationship with a vampire in her house (because she doesn’t want to move to Eric’s house) while she will have her fae cousin as a roomate…

      March 15, 2010 at 10:02 pm

Claude movin in is probably temp. IF Sookie moves in wit Eric she would need to revise her life and shes not ready for that commit. She does want to travel long distance to and from work, and she doesn’t want Eric to support her. Also, I’d like to think shes learned from her mistakes. Bill wanted her to move in wit him. What wld have happened when they broke up? She’d have nowhere to go assuming she sells her house once she movies out.

      • 30 T.Rece
        March 15, 2010 at 10:42 pm

Agreed. Claudes moving in should be temporary. But, while I don’t think she’s ready to commit to living with Eric full time, I think that her hesitance to stay there will lesson provided they won’t be able to go on conducting thier “business” with fairy claude around.

        • 31 Tracey
          March 16, 2010 at 12:16 am

i think for sookie to move in wit eric she will need some kind of ressurance that eric realli want her there that she doesnt owe him anything in return. Like he doesnt have any control over her.

i think thats why sookie turned down all the offers when her house was burned. SHe didnt want to burden anyone and she didnt want to owe anyone anything. She wants to feel like part of the equation not a side dish as she felt when she was wit jason for a few days. she likes to feel like she can take care of herself. An independant person if u will. She likes to help ppl out n she doesnt expect anything in return.

        • 32 Holby
          March 16, 2010 at 2:04 pm

In addition to the need for privacy/ability to “conduce their business,” Sookie may be more willing to stay with Eric for periods of time based on the idea that she may not have been kidnapped had she taken him up on his offer before! Perhaps after Amelia moves out and she is still unable to return to work?

i would like to see Sookie tap into magical powers. fairy power or other.. it wld be exciting to read i think.

    • 35 T.Rece
      March 15, 2010 at 10:40 pm

I’m pretty sure that CH has confirmed that Sookie doesn’t have any other powers than those already shown. You’ll have to tap into True Blood for that.lol

I don’t really see how her having Claude move in is all over the place though. Assuming Claude is simply full of himself and not a true threat, it seems in line with something Sookie would do. She is fiercly loyal to family…and she has even less now. How could she turn him away? She has the extra room and she needs the money (and protection). Were you expecting–or wanting– that aspect of her moral character to change? It never even crossed my mind really.I’m just hoping that his moving in holds a purpose and isn’t just meaningless filler.

        March 16, 2010 at 12:28 am

i didnt mean sookie gets new abilies. i meant she learned more bout herself. perhapps she has a natural thing wit magic bc shes part fae but Claude gives her a lil push in the right direction.

or Amelia teaches her a few things. seems like it would be interesting to read. also she cld protect herself a lil better.

Sookie jus opened her doors to Amelia w/out realli knowin her. sounds like she repeatin tha wit Claude. I expect her to grow up in the next few books to come. i want her to be more mature and learn from her misfortunes. she needs to be less trusitn. but it seems she still the same old sookie diggin deeper and deeper into a hole instead of finding herself and deciding what she realli wants. whats best for her!

          March 16, 2010 at 10:43 pm

I like the idea that Sookie is *something* more; she doesn’t have to have more powers or abilities than she has now, but maybe she has talents she doesn’t realize yet.

I see. Yea. I’d like Sookie to ditch the naive act!

  10. 39 VikingLover
    March 15, 2010 at 10:49 pm

Yeah, I agree with you TRece. Plus Claude probably moves in to protect Sookie from Dermot. It could make for a lot of comedy given how annoying Claude is – you know he’ll be all snarky. I’m sure if it means that Sookie will be protected during the day then Eric would be happy – if he feels like Claude can be trusted. I’m just wondering how they’ll be able to work around the whole fairy scent thing. Should be an interesting read. I just hope there is a lot of Viking in it! Plus, it gives Sookie an excuse to visit Eric at home and I’m DYING to read about Eric’s life/home. I really like it when they touch upon vampire politics and culture so I’m hoping they’ll be a lot of that in this book given that we’ll be introduced to Eric’s Maker and their relationship.

    • March 16, 2010 at 6:11 am

absolutely..and do we know if any of the other faeries have the “cloaking” ability like Niall? Could he put up a barrier when Eric is around? We know Claudia was flirty/tempting and enjoying the turmoil..but do they all have the ability to do that? I can’t remember if they said anything.

      • 41 VikingLover
        March 17, 2010 at 3:34 am

As far as I know, only Niall had the ability to mask his scent. I can’t remember Claude being in the same room as the vampires in the books – I just remember Claudine’s scenes. It’s a definite possiblity though.

Just imagine the smell that house will have for visiting vamps…..

I have to say, I am completely at a loss as to what to expect.

From what I read, Alexei was a sweet enough boy, will he be a whiny brat? Is Eric supposed to act as a big brother? Father?

    I don’t trust Claude. Period.

No mention of Beel on this one. So, I’m still unclear what’s the main plotline (other than being big on family relationships of all types).

FDTW- “When you smell like that,” he said, “I just want to fuck you and bite you and rub myself all over you.”

Claude moving in could definitely have some benefits. Just sayin’.

True, true, but then we’d have Sookie blaming the attraction on the bond AND fairy smell. Like the girl doesn’t have enough excuses standing by to begin with.

ooh this is getting me excited, only a month to go. The idea of Alexei Romanov being turned into a vampire is intriguing, I look forward to reading about that. Makes me think of a scene in Buffy where Buffy’s giving a convincing argument about Rasputin actually being a vampire. I don’t trust Claude either but Sookie is so desperate to grip onto any family ties she has regardless of personality. Claude isn’t going to be able to protect her from vampires, unless you count being a distraction for her to escape whilst they’re eating him.

Slow moving…hhmmm as long as it’s meaty enough with character and relationship development I’ll be happy. Thanks SVB for sharing this!

Claude is actually pretty smart and has a sense of humor. Remember when he brought Sookie home from the hospital to the apartment Sam lent her? Claude just usually doesn’t trouble himself with being considerate. He knows how and he can do it if he wants to. Maybe Sookie will tell him that as long as he’s staying in her house, he will practice common courtesy. If he still has his strip club, he’ll be gone nights, leaving the field open for Sookie to have visitors. This doesn’t have to be a disaster, in fact, they may get to know each other better. Claude misses his sisters.

wasnt the masking ability just a high tech thing Niall commissioned? I think Naill is making Claude stay with Sookie to keep an eye on her.
i am getting so exited for the book, think i’ll have to re read the series again. Gonna fake a 24 hour flu, and lock myself in my room in May.

Liz, the masking ability was fairy magic only Niall had as far as I know and he did say it was a convenient magic.

I wonder if Hadley’s son is gonna be included in DITF, I’ve read some of the spoilers but I can’t remember him being mentioned. Anyone know?

Okay, I didn’t know where to post this so I thought I would post this here. This is a question asked to CH on her forum about Alcide doing something devious in DITF:

    91 duckpond100 2010-03-31 14:11

You did hear clearly, dandman. Alcide does something very devious. He turned out to be a deeper and somewhat less likeable man the more I got to know him.

That’s not to say he’s not courageous and strong; he is.

Maybe he’ll betray Sookie or maybe will try to kill Eric (or make a secret alliance with FDC against him to get rid of him). I only hope that whatever it would be, will be devious enough and directly related to her and Eric. Because if it isn’t, Sookie is able to not noticing it or even to forgive him as she has been doing with all her suitors.

    • 62 ericrocks
      April 3, 2010 at 12:53 am

One must remember that Alcide also knows that Sook killed Debbie Pelt. I don’t care how many times he said he was over her and “pulled her out of him by the roots”. He probably will never really get over Sook doing that, even in defense of her own life. Face it, sometimes you can’t help whom you love, even if you know it is really bad idea. Abjure, or no abjure.

I wonder if he finds out that Eric was involved in Debbie’s death and the following cover-up? It wouldn’t surprise me if he lets it be known, putting the entire blame on Eric. I really wouldn’t be a bit surprised if he did something along these lines.

  17. April 2, 2010 at 11:58 pm

You would think the crap with Debbie would have done the trick…she should have cussed him out up one side/down the other & never talked to him again..then she wouldn’t have gone to the stupid Packmaster thing & met HPP..she coulda been sexin up Eric wayyyy sooner LOL

alexei romanov (directly related to our british royal family) was in line to become the next tsar (king) of russia. (weird fact: the entire russian army and navy were named his honourary godparents)

they were all abducted at the beginning of the russian revolution when the figure head of lenin took over (who was actually an author himself) rasputin was actually there to help heal alexei after a nasty incident that injured his groin *ouch*

I think that Claude will move in to help protect Sookie from Dermot. It was said that Dermot has the ability to mask his smell, too, because he was able to hang out with Amelia and Tray without them realizing that he was Fae.
I also would like to see Sookie demand a traditional wedding from Eric, if he wants her to acknowledge that they are wed. I am a little bit on pins and needles about Eric’s maker showing up, though. Also, with her Fae blood (and barring and major diseases or accidents), couldn’t Sookie potentially live a longer life than the average human?
My big prediction for this (or subsequent) book is that Eric will be offered Victor’s job, and Eric will have to decide between a relationship with Sookie or his political ambitions. I just wish that there was a way that Eric and Sookie could have a kid. Sookie adopting Hunter seems like a no-brainer, but when has CH ever made things easy on us?
Either way, I just hope that Sookie does not end up with Sam. He’s awesome, but does not revv my engine.
