Eric’s hair and my fragile grip on reality – Pt 1

I freely admit I’m like a dog with a bone on this subject – but we are going there, yet again.

Yes, it’s Eric’s hair.

Eric’s season three hair – a subject which has been sending us (ok ME) into random conniptions since February – was once again a hot topic in the comments of yesterday’s Webisode Promo post.

So for the sake of my sanity we are going to get to the bottom of this hair issue, once and for all. But to do that, we need to do some snooping.

And I’m on it.

27 June 2009

True Blood is just about to wrap up season 2 filming. Alexander attends the Bruno premiere in LA with 100% Verified Viking Hair.

Early August 2009

Filming for Straw Dogs begins. Set photos show his highlights cut out and his hair back to his natural dirty blond. It’s cut quite short for his role – including through the front.

Early October 2009

Filming ends for Straw Dogs, according to the Vault and various other sources. As of October 11th, the film is listed on IMDb as being in “Post Production”.

November, 2009

Alex goes to Stockholm to film extra scenes for the indie production, Puss. He wore a wig for these additional scenes, therefore nothing was done to his real hair.

In the wig:

Returning from Stockholm in mid-November after Puss shoot – hair is still very short, and dirty blonde:

January 5, 2010

Production has just started on season 3 of True Blood, and the paps catch Skars alone at the movies. Wait! There is definitely much more length than there was just six weeks before. And still dirty blond.

Now since Alex’s hair was longish in early January, the Eric minisode we saw a glimpse of yesterday was filmed in early January. Why? Because the hair in the screencap below is NOT the same hair we have been seeing in other season 3 promos (pics further down for comparison purposes!), but it is very similar in length and colour to the pic above. And it is parted and slicked back like season 2, though it’s a little shorter. It definitely has not been attacked with the auburn rinse yet, which makes sense if this scene is meant to occur between season 2 and 3:

[I realise my obsessive, stalkerish behaviour is freaking some of you right out at this point…but bear with me. I’m going somewhere with this, really I AM!]

January 18, 2010

Moving just over a week forward from the sad, lonely guy at the movies alone pic on Jan 5. Remember True Blood has started filming – and Alex shows up at the Golden Globes with his hair like THIS. I thought it was odd, but it was just this image that looked really obviously dyed, so I blamed the lighting.

February 17 and 18, 2010

These images come out, a day apart. We realise something is definitely up, and I let it rip…you can read it here (beware, much swearing). If you can’t see that hair has dye in it of an auburn persuasion, you need to adjust your monitor or your glasses. Because that is NOT his natural colour. And it is not the lighting either. He’s been under lights plenty of times in the last few years and his hair has never appeared that colour.

14 & 21 March, 2010

True Blood promos are released, and for the first time we see Season 3 Eric.

And I rant again.

31 March, 2010

Alan Ball feeds this gem to Ausiello when asked about the obvious change to Eric’s hair colour:

“Alexander made a movie during his hiatus and his hair was darker when he returned,” explains Ball with a laugh. “It wasn’t a choice [we made].”

Straw Dogs finished filming in October. His hair was NOT dyed for his part in that film – in the set pics above you can see it is his natural colour. Nor was it dyed for the Puss reshoot, in which he wore a wig. His hair was clearly still his natural colour and beginning to grow out lengthwise in early January as can be seen above. A deliberate grow out to film the Eric minisode – which has to fit into the end of season 2 timeline. By mid January, his hair has been cut shorter again and an auburn rinse put through it that clearly was not there even two weeks before – let alone MONTHS before when he was filming other projects. An auburn rinse and cut that conspicuously appeared right when True Blood began filming.

By mid January, Alex’s only filming commitment was True Blood – Puss and Straw Dogs were long since done.

And of course, none of the above even takes into account the fact that actors who are contracted to a television series have clauses restricting what they can do to their appearance. This is precisely so that they don’t return to the set after a hiatus looking like a FUCKING FRAT BOY WHO CAME OFF SECOND BEST IN A BRAWL WITH HIS MOTHER’S HAIR DYE.

The fact that Ball is feeding us a line – and he is feeding us a line, no doubt in my mind – is making me very suspicious of his intentions in season 3. If Ball is telling porkies, there has to be a reason. A reason he doesn’t want us to know about yet.

And don’t tell me that it’s for the Leif storyline, it just does not wash now. That doesn’t explain why his hair has been dark since they started filming episode one, and it doesn’t explain why it is still dark now, almost five months later. This is a season long change and our blond Viking is GONE.

I was going to finish this post with a rational discussion about why this assault on Eric’s hair is practically giving me a stroke, instead of just ranting about it. But it’s already too long.

I’ll save that for tomorrow. I need a shot of something alcoholic and a good lie down before I blog about this subject again.

I was actually enjoying your stalker-ness & ranting until you said “our blond Viking is GONE.” That made me want to cry a little, lol. I guess it’s back on the hating AB train. *sigh*

HOLY SNAPS! That hair thing for the minisode….and then the change…and then the colour….and then the lies….*sobs*choke*gasp* WHAT THE FUCK ALAN BALL!?

P.S: Yes, this was very stalkerish. Yes. I liked it. A+

While I prefer him with blonde hair, I don’t understand what the big deal is tbh. :\ I don’t see why people are blaming Alan for it either…?

    • April 20, 2010 at 5:45 am

We are blaming him for it because it is obviously a deliberate change for the show.

Gee you think you make yourself clear… 😉

Please check the JJ site. There pics of Askars poolside and he has blonde highlights.

Maybe Alex just wanted darker hair. Maybe it’s just laziness on the show’s part. I personally don’t believe there’s some kind of deeper meaning to it but I don’t want to ruin anyone’s fun! 😉

Well, for what it’s worth, Anna Paquin has been very vocal about the disadvantages of being a bottle blonde. And I can understand– my hair is the exact same dirty blonde color as Alexander Skarsgard’s, and I highlight it regularly. It breaks, dries out, and is a general pain in the ass if you don’t take good care of it… so I can only imagine how tough it is for AP, who is a natural brunette, to keep up with the constant bleaching done to her hair.

But they certainly haven’t turned Sookie into a brunette because of it. (Yet. LOL.)

  4. April 20, 2010 at 5:47 am

I agree with Green.. i like your stalkerish… it just means we don’t look like loonies doing this ourselves.

I was ok to a point with them cutting his hair from season 1 to 2, because lets face it, Alex looks hot with the shorter blond hair (it would have been different if the wig actually fit the book description). But now.. with the darker hair. It pisses me off, and to think AB has stated this is Eric season. He is making him dark haired like fucking Bill.

If AB is telling us a lie about the hair, then who is to know which of what he says is true. The faith i have in AB is dwindling. AB prove me wrong, prove me wrong man!

I’m right there with ya SVB. His hair is the trademark of his character! While we knew the long hair (i.e. the wig) wouldn’t work on the show…that DOESN’T give AB the go-ahead to change the color too! GRRR!

  6. April 20, 2010 at 6:02 am

I’m just glad you had the guts to go off about this. I wanted to, but was afraid my friends would have me committed. Gotta keep it under wraps now and then!
I can’t figure out what it is for. Where, please tell me, where is Eric not blond? The least would have been to leave his hair his natural dirty blond. I guess we’ll see and hope there is a legit reason and not just AB doing something ridiculous and pointless.

I can definetly see where you are going with this SVB, and yes it is stockerish but its cool, I liked reading about it…as always you a great at what you do. Unfortunatly our viking is gone which is sad but of course AB can change anything because this is his interpretation and merely using the characters CH created for TB which really does suck. I guess this is where we will seperate the whole idea of the books from the show (character wise) I mean look at what they did with Tara…in the story she is white and not such a nut case and Lafayette 😦 But not to worry we will still have our Viking in the books, unless CH does something to ruin it (sigh…crossing my fingers)

[“Because when vampires KEEP SECRETS from humans that they love, their hair follicles turn darker,” deadpans Alan Ball. “And that’s especially true if they’re carrying a torch for a blond waitress.”]

Obviously THAT isn’t the reason for the hair color, BUT sarcastic bitches use to say truths behind their jokes. So…
[The fact that Ball is feeding us a line – and he is feeding us a line, no doubt in my mind – is making me very suspicious of his intentions in season 3. So if Ball is telling porkies, there has to be a reason. A reason he doesn’t want us to know about yet.]

Call me negative or whatever way you want to. Anyone who wishes to believe in Ball, be my guest. It’s a choice. But I believe what I saw and what I’m seeing, and when I’ll see TB again, then I will judge (again). Because I don’t trust him regarding Eric’s character. No one believes me (ok, maybe some lol) when I said AB changed the core of Eric’s character. The core isn’t who he like or love, or what would happen between him and Sookie. The core are his traits, is HIS personality. The hair? To be honest, it pisses me but that is the last of my concerns. Because while he has been filling Bill’s character with ALL Eric’s traits and important scenes from the books, he has been creating an Eric with a secret torture dungeon, who misses the trill of the feeding, who sells drugs, who has been fond of waitresses since the viking era, and who reminds with pleasure the delicious taste of children. I don’t care AT ALL the plot reasons for the changes. The fact is that it’s not his personality. And while I ranted like a maniac because he also was described as a NARCISSIST on one of the next season’s promos, most of you found it funny. But the fact is there is a narcissistic personality subtype called the “amorous narcissist” who is shallow and can be described like an histrionic “Don Juan” in these times because uses seductive and erotic behaviors, is exhibitionist, -AND, because needs to be the center of attention, uses his physical appearance to draw attention to himself. So, I don’t doubt the hair mistery could find an answer on this PFFFF. Or maybe it’s just the subliminal way AB is using to let us know that TB vampire DEFINITELY is not the blond Viking from the books. So pick your choice. Whatever reason he had to do it, I don’t care, because it’s a just another travesty with the character.

And what is a real pitty is that I really don’t care about a role reversal after all these changes in his personality because the damage to the character is done. His honor has gone. Because, as Aaine says, our blond Viking is GONE.

(FUCK!!!! I hate so much that bitch….)

Eric in the books is Don Juan and Sookie knows that Eric is a player. In the books, Eric likes women and Sookie knows that about him.

I really don’t care what color is Eric’s hair. AB loves to talk bull crap. The color of Eric’s hair is what Alan Ball want it to be this season and maybe it’s part of the story.

        • April 20, 2010 at 3:26 pm

I’m really curious as to what makes you think Eric is a Don Juan in the books, LLE. Nine books now and we haven’t seen him flirt with anyone besides Sookie. That’s not to say he hasn’t – the books only reflect Sookie’s POV. I get the impression that he is certainly an admirer of women but a player? Not so much. He seems to me to be a bit past the thrill of the chase.

I have no doubt the hair colour is part of the story – my concern is with HOW it is part of the story.

            April 20, 2010 at 3:33 pm

agree with SVB, in the books I never saw him with a another woman, I know he was not alone of course, would be impossible;)
may seem silly, but I think this is a way of saying that Eric is also the HEA, because I think even CH seems jealous of him with another woman!

            April 20, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Sookie knows he a player and Bill has told her in book 1. Jason meets Eric in Book 4 and he find out about Eric history of being great lover to women. Eric even mention about what women want from him in book 9. The character of Eric loves being around women. Sookie has sex with other guys and Eric probably has plenty of sex too with other women. Pam and Chow was surprised when Eric did not want to have sex with the witch in book 4.

Okay, I can’t even really respond to this because I don’t know where to start.

Bill told Sookie Eric is a player?………….well Bill has said a lot of things that were not true.

All that Jason found out from Eric is that he should take better care of his sister. He was very impressed that Hallow lusted after Eric so much, ASSUMING he must be quite the ladies man, er vamp.

In book 9, Eric was trying to discern from Sookie what she wanted from him/their relationship as she was not acting typical in his experience. Which, yes, by the way, would be vast because he is ONE THOUSAND YEARS OLD!

Pam and Chow were not at all surprised when Eric insultingly refused Hallow’s terms. They thought maybe that it might have been easier if he had agreed, but they know vamp/witch pairings are frowned upon because magic of witches can be so harmful to the undead.

                April 20, 2010 at 6:23 pm

In the book 4 Eric found out he was a ladies man and he was thrill about that. Sookie gave clues why the witch wanted Eric besides having sex. The witch wanted to drain Eric after the sex. Eric was smart not to do it. Bill is not honest vampire.

Eric has been player but fallen in love with a woman can changed him. I believed that Eric has fallen in love with Sookie.

          • 22 LLE
            April 20, 2010 at 4:42 pm

At first Sookie was the chase but more he got to know Sookie more he like being around her and he started to have feeling for her. Eric kept mention to Sookie that he hates having feelings. He started to fall for her in book 3.

Gigi- you are right AB has changed the core of Eric’s character. That is what makes the show so frustrating for me. I feel like the blonde hair was the last thing I could count on that was essential book Eric! Maybe that is why we are all so upset about the hair. Now it seems like AB has changed everything about Eric. And I agree with the others, what worries me is what does the hair represent?

LLE- For me, what is so amazing about the books is that they show how a person can grow and change. Eric presents himself as all powerful, impervious to emotion, and could care less about humans, but when he meets Sookie he gradually starts to change. For me, the series is about two people, Eric and Sookie, who are from two very different places, coming together and changing in order to be together. So far I think Eric’s character has grown and changed more than Sookie’s has. And, I wouldn’t trust anything Bill told Sookie in Book 1, we now know Bill didn’t want Sookie to be near Eric in case Eric found out what Bill’s assignment was from Queen Sophie-Anne and could compromise Bill’s cover. But I digress..

SVB- As always such a joy to read!

                April 20, 2010 at 6:28 pm

Eric has grown more than Sookie has in the books. Sookie been acting like teenager that discover guys. Sookie has very low-esteem about herself.

              • April 21, 2010 at 11:01 pm

The one thing that gets me is that AB has removed several of the connecting factors between Eric and Sookie. The hair and eye colour for one. There is constant mentions of their similar eye colour and identical hair colour in nearly every books. That is an important detail.
Second the fact that TB!Eric doesn’t have the one things that even Bill picks up that Sookie and Eric share: A zest for life. Although Eric may be becoming complacent with life mainstreaming, he was still enjoying it. In AB’s world, Eric is just plain bored. He doesn’t look like he is enjoying any part of what is happening, and in reality it looks like he should have meet the sun long ago. He said it to the blood prostitute… there is no joy feeding on the willing. SO what is Sookie going to be when they get together. I’m sure she’ll be willing to let Eric feed from her, cos she is there for him.

Little changes in Eric character are ruining it. I know i don’t watch the show to see it as the Bill and Sookie love fest. I know that Bill needed to be boosted a bit cos lets face it he really sucked in the books. BUT, at the cost of Eric’s character and development… F*ck No!! I just hope that season 3 will repair and replace the stupid changes that AB/Writers have created. I’ll still watch it, only to Watch Alexander and Joe on screen. And i really hope that they don’t give more of Eric away to Joe to boost him up too.

                Ok *end Rant*

You’re not the only one, I think most of us can say that we’re not happy about the dark hair. Great investigative work!!! the whole part about him having it like that for a role when they started shooting was never believable. They could’ve quickly dyed his hair as they were doing his make up, doesn’t take long and shows are very concerned about such things so they would’ve done it right away or would have told AS to get it done ASAP! The first time I saw it I thought it had to be the whole Leif disguise but then i saw he had dark hair for the first episode and no reason he would do the disguise so early on.

I am sure it has to be addressed on the show but I am worried about what the reason is. I pray it is not something real stupid like, Eric, dying his hair to resemble Bill thinking it would help him in getting Sookie. I mean even AB wouldn’t do something that stupid, right? Maybe has to do something with the whole revenge plot for him, but then again why have it dark the entire season basically.

With whats been done with Eric’s character in S1 and S2 and now the dark hair, he better be a freaking saint this season well towards Sookie at least. Maybe even do more for her than he did in book 3, otherwise the whole season 4 amnesia plot will look stupid to most viewers who haven’t read the books. Also, AB will completely make Sookie look like an idiot to take Eric in and for viewers to see them two together like that. Hurting sookies character would not be keeping with the spirit of the books. From the first promo seems like Eric takes a bullet for Sookie so maybe that will start off the season with Eric protecting Sookie and showing them get closer. Hopefully not only will he fix her driveway but will fix her whole damn house since it obviously needs a lot of work. They took away from Eric and now they need to add even more to his role this season.

I agree and loved the timeframes! They couldn’t leave well enough alone! They had to “eff” with one of the best parts of the Viking (we all know what “part” is number uno!).
And WTF is up with his clothes anymore?! I mean come on, track suits?? Vikings/Bad-assed Sheriffs don’t wear track suits for Criminy Sakes!
June 2009 was clearly the best his hair was, and if they would have just left it alone by now the length would have been Viking-status — it sucks that he has to work on anything but True Blood but I guess he has to eat too! DAMN!

I don’t have a sound theory but it’s almost like AB is seeing a reaction to the characters that’s not exactly along the line of what he expected and it’s like he’s trying to balance out Eric’s likability so he can keep him a darker character (both in looks and portrayal). I can’t help but think that he expected Bill to be liked a lot more than he ended up being, both by fans and media, or in reverse, that Eric would be less liked than he ended up being.

He couldn’t have been oblivious to the general fan reaction at last year’s comic con, and truly have a feeling that it was not what he hoped for, that he wanted to play out Bill as the positive romantic lead for a while longer than the general public seems willing to accept. Other than BL’s, most people are quite ready to see Sookie move on to someone else, Eric, being one of the obvious candidates, even for people that don’t care much about the books. That is especially true in the general press.

I wonder too if it’s not an attempt to put a damper on the overwhelming Viking love. Silly AB, if he thinks changing the Viking’s hair color is going to change how we see him. Didn’t he read the books;)

I’m glad other’s are pissed off about the ‘hair’ thing!! I personnally loved the ‘wig’ lol athou mayb i was alone there!!

Wonder what ppl would say if bill shaved his head or turned blond or Sookie turned brunnette.
It makes me really sad how much TB Eric is being changed from Book Eric:(
Althou i cant wait for TB to come back im kinda dreading it also as i actually hated the end of season 2 compared to the book. What i have seen of the ‘new’ Eric im really not keen on the look that have been chosen for him and i think AB seems to be all about his look rather than letting his personality come out!! But hey you never know AB may suprise us all:) Mayb???

Anyways i wanted to say hi to you all cos i read hear everyday and you all make me laugh with your comments, its a great website!! thank you for keeping me (kinda) sane:)

What is with this latest trend of poofing Alex’s hair straight up for magazine spreads? It looks gawd-awful!

SVB – good detective work on the hair. While it’s not a huge concern of mine in the whole scheme of things, it make one go “hmmmmm” in regards as to what is going on. Like others have mentioned, it must be leading up to something. I guess all we can do is just sit back, sit on our hands, and try to patiently wait for the webisodes and the new season and see what happens.

  13. April 20, 2010 at 11:03 am

Dee mentioned the whole revenge plot and it got me wondering. We have heard there will be flashbacks to Eric’s
early days with Godric, could the person still among the present day undead? Grasping at straws here, but
the hair thing has me unhinged.

Thanks for the paper…. errr, I mean… hair trail! Like you, I have also been following closely on this matter. It is definitely very upsetting and unnerving! For all we know, amnesiac Eric is going to be changed amnesiac Bill in S4. Eric’s hair has always been blond, all through the books, it is a physical trait and one that instantly distinguishes him from the other characters. Eric and Sookie have the exact same hair color / shade, for f*#$ sake! How could this happen??? Is AB taking this away from us so that it will be easier for him to change the book plots?? Because from book 3 onwards, Bill has not done squat for Sookie and I’m certain AB will not allow that in TB. How would he be able to appease all the BLs? Aaaarrrgh! The thought of Eric’s true character being changed infuriates me!! This hair thing is like the straw that breaks the camel’s back. I have overlooked so many, many issues I have with TB but this is just….. Now the thought of your words “This is a season long change and our blond Viking is GONE.” just breaks my heart!

I think it was done just to annoy fans fo Eric, has no logical explanation to convince me of that disaster, his hair is blonde naturally had no need for any change color, and the lame explanation of AB only confirms this.
What irritates me more than anything he’s breaking the rules not only the book as the series because it was specifically mentioned by Bill think that a vampire can not change your appearance. Either that or sheer laziness of the staff of makeup and hair show, which I do not think that would change the appearance of a character without the guidance of AB.

I agree with your analysis on the hair issue, but it may well be the undercover disguise eric needs for club dead. Wouldn’t his viking blonde hair render him unmistakingly recognizable by Russell or other vamps in Jackson? In the book he does don a disguise…AB can easily have him lighten it again in the future.

PS: I cried when I watched season 2 TB and saw how they cut his hair. I did not know about real hair/wig. But I loved him with season one blonde, longish hair. And in the books, it’s very long. We will never see that…

I liked the analogy about maybe its a disguise for Club Dead — with AB, stranger things have happened and he always likes to screw with us!

AB—you gotta get him back in character! We all remember what you did to Billy Boy from Season 1 to now and that was a pure disaster (lady bangs, pasty face–need I go on?!). So here’s a HUGE Viking Fan who is pleading with you to KNOCK IT OFF (sorry for the screams!). Leave him be! I would take that gawd awful wig from Season 1 back compared to the “squeaky clean” image you’re giving him now — WTF!! — he’s a vampire and a Viking vampire to boot — should be seen in furs or leather — because those damn track suits have got to GO too! Quit feeding the makeup/hair staff that crazy crack cause its getting out of control!

And definitely didn’t like the “scary hair” on the cover of that mag — nope, didn’t do a thing for me — made me ill; that’s about it! He looked better in the photos at that outdoor concert when he was going nuts with the bloodsucking paparazzi! At least he was looking “dirty” and not so damn “Richie Cunningham!” Holy Crap; stop the insanity please!

[WTF!! — he’s a vampire and a Viking vampire to boot — should be seen in furs or leather — because those damn track suits have got to GO too!]

After I read answer like “Bill brought a Bull to Merlott’s in order for Sam to imprint on it for S2 finale”, and [AS made a movie during his hiatus and his hair was darker when he returned, explains Ball with a laugh -It wasn’t a choice we made]…

maybe Alan Ball will use his one TB FOR DUMMIES classic answers to say that Eric like to buy clothes on sale by quantities, and he also like to excersise at night on the secret gym he has by the torture dungeon in Fangtasia’s basement. Because he thinks we are morons enough to accept such responses.

    • April 20, 2010 at 3:31 pm

OK, I admit, I don’t mind him in track suits. I prefer jeans and t-shirts–and that black leather jacket (DAMN that boy looks good in leather!)–but I actually think the track suits kind of suit him.

The fact that Ball is feeding us a line – and he is feeding us a line, no doubt in my mind – is making me very suspicious of his intentions in season 3. If Ball is telling porkies, there has to be a reason. A reason he doesn’t want us to know about yet.

Ok, here is another of my conspiracy theories but I haven’t thought it out very well so please excuse me if I don’t make myself very clear.

IF IF IF the ring is enchanted—what if one of the purposes of the spell on the ring is to cause Sookie to see Eric in an ‘evil’ light, symbolized by the dark hair? NOT that the sole purpose of the spell is to cause her to see him with dark hair, but that in her subconcious mind she knows Bill is evil and so she equates “evil” with his dark hair and subliminally imparts this physical quality onto Eric. If part of the purpose of a “purple spell” that I talked about in my piece about the ring is to “force others to bend to one’s will.” part of that purpose would be to make sure Sookie doesn’t fall into Eric’s arms as it seemed she might be poised to do until she slipped that ring on her finger. If this is the case then we will only see Eric with dark hair when he’s in a scene with Sookie. The rest of the time he might be wearing a (hopefully top notch) wig.

I don’t know about this theory, Sunny. But I did consider the possibility that the characters’ appearances are changing to reflect Sookie’s view of them. Someone else pointed out that Bill’s appearance changed drastically in season 2– and I also think that it did, and NOT in a good way. To me, he looked older and softer… maybe to symbolize that he was taking Gran’s place?

I don’t know. I’m grasping at straws here. But still… somthing has to account for this mess.

Plus it would also depend if he went in the pool and whether or not it has chlorine-based treatments in it, but I guess that would lighten his hair, if anything from the solid residue (white powder).

              2. Looking at Kate Bosworth all over Alex Skarsgard made me want to vomit (she was practically giving him head!) sorry-but she was!

              3. As for the hair-it looked highlighted on the top but still really dark brown on the bottom and around the ear which is a very bad coloring job.

              4. I hope he didn’t go in the pool, or if he did I hope he washed his hair right after, chlorine will turn it green!

I dye my hair constantly, and always going back and forth between blonde hair and very dark red hair. Although, I LOVE red hair(the very dark burgundy not light red) i don’t do it as often bc it fades extremely fast, infact within 2-3 weeks the color is basically gone. If you start off darker, it starts getting that light auburn, light brown or even strawberry blonde color which happens to me. With him it’s simply the auburn slowly washing away. Even recently when I had red hair, after a few weeks it looked almost identical to AS hair in those pics.

The good thing is that they still have 3 episodes to shoot and he is letting it get lighter. However, I’d prefer he just dye it back to blonde but maybe he will for the last episodes or even episode *crosses fingers*

So I go back and forth between blonde and red, just think it looks better. I also get bored quickly of my hair and I’ll let it grow long then chop it off real short constantly doing something different. I dont keep it the same for too long, and yes I know I have issues hahaha.

But this has nothing to do with the topic lol so i’ll stop talking about this.

I’m really impressed with your “research” SVB! And it may not have settled the issue for us, but at least it pretty firmly establishes the fact that whatever change is happening to Eric’s hair this season is most definitely an intentional one.

If they had highlighted his natural hsir from that January pic, no one would have known the difference. But the auburn rinse has me VERY confused too. Incidentally, did anyone notice that BILL’S hair looked a little reddish in a lot of scenes from season 2… in contrast to his super-dark, super-confederate mullet from season 1? It was so subtle, though, that you could have just assumed a change of gaurd (for the worse) in the hair and makeup department. But now I’m wondering if it was intentional…

For myself, I have to say that I’m not particularly married to Eric’s hair being one way or the other. I just want it explained if they’re going to make any changes. Any stupid excuse will do– I’m pretty sure, for example, that getting blood on your highlights WOULDN’T necessitate a haircut. But at least they gave us SOMETHING to explain the disposal of that awful, stringy wig. Anyway, as for this issue, we’re obviously just going to have to wait and see. Alan Ball definitely did this on purpose, and he’s clearly staying tight-lipped as to why.

On an unrelated note, that short wig above looks suprisingly cute, if a little Prince Valiant-ish…

I saw an interview with SM and he was talking about Bill and his inability to quite figure out the appropriate hairstyle for this era. This was the explanation for the difference between his (in my opinion) greasy hair from S1 transforming to the “puffier” hair in S2 and he said that he would be experiencing another hair transformation in S3.

This makes sense if this is his first effort at mainstreaming (his first appearance in S1 was definitely “vampiric”). But this doesn’t work as an explanation for Eric’s hair as he seems pretty comfortable in his mainstream-businessman role, but perhaps that is what AB is doing.

Hmmm… that sounds a wee bit like a bullshit excuse, to me. Kinda like Sam Trammell saying that Bill brought the bull in the finale.

I’m beginning to think that the actors are being coached to give innocuous responses to these (seemingly minor) questions. Maybe because to answer them truthfully might be giving something major away.

Or, maybe we ARE blowing the entire thing out of proportion. Nothing would really surprise me at this point.

        • 91 MASpencer
          April 20, 2010 at 3:02 pm

Well, now I’d like to consider the mythological symbolism of these hair changes. And I’m going to go there (against my own better judgment, LOL) mainly because of that weird comment that Eden (Jessica’s sister) made to Sookie about having “a problem with hair.” I assume that’s referring to her ginger status, natch. LOL.

ANYWAY… allow me to submit the following information I found on the internets:

“Similarly in the paintings of the Sistine Chapel in 1874, Michelangelo’s Temptation depicts a brown haired Eve being handed a red apple by a red headed bare breasted serpent woman (Satan manifested as woman of course carries red hair). In the adjacent fresco Eve is thrown out of the garden with a shameful face and a twist of red hair.”

“Eve’s red hair is seen as the stain of sin like the original scarlet letter. Later her son, Cain, will bare the red hair and also a fall from grace.”

I’ve also heard that there’s an old superstition that redheadedness is a sign of vampirism. So, I’m going to say there’s something to it.

And I don’t think it would be too out of left field to say that True Blood is pushing symbolism with the hair. For example, it may be true that they cut Eric’s hair JUST to do away with that God-awful wig. But you could also view the act as marking a transition during which he moved from power to vulnerability and loss of control, as represented by losing Godric, being under the Queen’s thumb, and developing unexpected feelings for Sookie. In other words, it’s an allusion to Samson.

          Things to ponder…

True, that. I know I’ve harped on Bill being evil but he’s merely a demonic minion of SA’s, who, in a way, acts as a ventriloquist to Bill’s dummy/serpent in the garden (just as Satan did with the snake) of Bon Temps (alluded to in Sam and Daphne’s convo in the lake about BT being “just the world, like it was when it was brand spanking new)

That being said, the “redness” of Eric’s hair (assuming it will be a noticeable change in the series) may not be an indication of his true character, so much as a symbol of Sophie Anne’s power over him, with specific respect to the V selling.

Same goes with Bill, of course, with respect to his seduction of Sookie.

Dammit MA I’m getting to this tomorrow LOL.

But yes, red hair has a long and illustrious association with all things evil and tempting.

And long hair on a male is symbolic of power and strength, right back to the biblical stories. So it doesn’t take a genius to work out what cutting Eric’s long hair off may represent 😦

            April 20, 2010 at 3:33 pm

WOW! Now this idea makes sense! Not saying that is what Alan intends, but it definitely makes sense as a stand-alone reason for the crazy hair color changes for both Bill and Eric.

Does this mean that Jessica is going to become all evil also since she’s a natural ginger? Since she’s not a character from the books … Alan can make her storyline into anything he wants … so it is a feasible direction to take.

And how does red hair correlate with the symbolism of red for Eric (corvette, cranberry jacket, red cell phone, etc etc) …. does that support red = evil or is there a struggle going on?

            Berry Berry Interesting! =)

I don’t think the color red itself will represent evil (though it’s definitely representative of lust and vitality– hence the strong relationship between blood and sex we see depicted). But I do think that the red HAIR will carry a deeper symbolism. I certainly hope, at least, that Eric’s connection to the color red will remain as it is in the books, WITHOUT the addition of any particular negative connotations.

I guess we’ll have to see where True Blood goes with that, though.

hmmm very interesting and great point!!! In the books the color red was important between Sookie and Eric’s relationship. Red was used many times to show Eric cared for Sookie. The coat and phone both being red and gifts he gave to her bc he didn’t want her to go without things she needed. Could the hair be symbolic for his feelings towards Sookie? I doubt on the show they’ll have his hair color change on it’s own but maybe has to do with the reason Eric decides to change his color. I don’t know how much sense that made or if I am just being hopeful and trying to find some GREAT reason for the color change. Is AB gonna throw in some crazy twist with this blood bond to explain the hair color change?

Hopefully we wont have to wait until June 13th to find out, maybe this will be answered in the minisodes since it seems his hair is darker in those too. Also pics of Eric from first episode is darker so whatever the reason for change happens prior to 1st episode, somewhere in the timeline of end of 2nd season which should be showed in one of the 6 minisodes.

Eric replace Sookie old coat with a red coat and he destroy Sookie cell phone and he replace it with red phone. Eric is responsible for giving Sookie gravel drive way because he owe her big time. Eric found out that she was not getting much pay from Dallas and wanted to know if Bill paid her. Sookie told him that Bill did pay her but the money went for taxes. Bill sure did not pay her much at all for the work she was doing.

After that, Eric alway was watching out for Sookie and making sure she get paid.

I love your stalker-ish, obsessive behavior because then I’m not alone AND I don’t have to do all the research for myself.

Although I usually prefer darker haired men (give me Johnathan Schaech, Ian Sommerhalder, Hugh Jackman, Tom Welling any day), I’ve grown to love Eric’s character as he is written so I’d like for him to stay that way. I’m sure I’ll still enjoy TB, but Eric will not be the same blond Viking love god to me with darker hair. Hey, I’m consistent–I hated Savannah being changed to blond Amanda Seyfried when Jonathan Sparks wrote her as a brunette in “Dear John”. Hair color is just the simplest way to maintain a character’s description (dyes, wigs), so I don’t see why it’s so hard to leave this one detail alone.

I think, if there really IS a reason for both Bill and Eric having a red cast to their hair, it will be an illustration of Sophie Anne’s influence on both vampire’s actions. So that wouldn’t include Pam, since presumably, Sophie Anne has not directly comissioned her to do any “dirty work.”

      That’s one theory, at least…

I have just started checking out this site, trying to read as much as I can in the small amount of free time I have. I just want to say that I am so glad there is someone else out there who noticed this! I love the site! I have enjoyed everything I have read so far and I can’t wait to read some more!

I hope we can get to the root of the problem.

between Bills bangs, Sookies wardrobe, and Erics hair issues, they need to fire their current stylist/costume designer, and find someone with taste.

In regards to Erics wig, seriously, it looked like something laying around the floor a week after holloween in Value Village.
I read somewhere that Stephen had creative freedom with his own hair, and kept changing it to what he thought Sookie would like, and to impress gran, lame-o

Maybe TB!Eric has folicular kink, so he has Pam and Yvette dye his hair during their ménage à trois because it gets him off.

(And it makes just about as much sense as other theories. Oh, AB, why can’t you have continuity in hair and make-up?)

Thank you for your rant! I’m so pleased to find someone who gets as wound up as I do about the subject of Eric’s hair. I loved the wig the first time we saw him in season 1 then it just got progressively worse. It ended up looking like a bad pageboy cut that had been been washed in oil. Ugh. Eric’s hair is so important to his character in the books and I was stupidly hoping it would be as important in the show. How wrong can you be? Alan Ball needs to sort out the consistency in his vampire mythology. Bill can stay the same, Jessica will always remain a virgin but Eric can cut and colour his hair as often as he likes AND get thinner. I miss long-haired huge-as-a-house Eric from season 1.

Who the hell cares? Someone sent me a link to this and I didn’t believe that it was as freaky and weird as they described…..but it definitely is.

    Get a life, lady.

See now, that’s funny, because I think it’s totally reasonable for a fan to be curious about the obviously deliberate physical changes being made to characters on a VAMPIRE SHOW.

Welcome to the big time SVB! 😉

      • April 24, 2010 at 11:05 pm

I totally agree. Why come and read something titled as it is, and then tell us to get a life. These type of sites (sookieverse, Bloodbondsblog, Midnight charms blog, Rygee’s blog) are here for those fans that like to look deeper and think about things a little more then normal. So unless you really have constructive stuff to bring to the table, maybe you shouldn’t waste your time reading it.

If you watch the show for entertainment only then when people offer you links to look at just say no (kinda sounds like a anti-drug campaign). (sorry if it sounds harsh, kids woke me up way to early this morning and the coffee didn’t work).

      Who the hell cares?

Well Yoland, judging by the fact that this post has 124 comments on it, quite a few people care. Perhaps because a vampire, by definition should not be able to change their appearance. Jessica’s hymen grows back every time she has sex, yet Eric can have a cut and colour every season without consequence.

It could be argued that there is a major hole in Ball’s vampire mythology, right there.
And yes, we do care about that. If you don’t, that’s cool. Feel free go drop your troll bombs somewhere else.

Oh that’s right….you have a LIFE. And you would be too busy with that to be trolling random blogs, clogging them with your inane bullshit, wouldn’t you?

      Have a nice day.

[ Jessica’s hymen grows back every time she has sex, yet Eric can have a cut and colour every season without consequence.

See, I think hair changes are entirely plausible since hair itself is dead. Hair follicles, on the other hand, are alive, and when *they* get damaged on a vampire, they would heal instantly just as a vampire’s skin heals instantly after a cut. So, my guess is that a vampire could easily get back to the exact hair they had before they were turned by waxing their scalp or scalping themselves.

I could totally see AB having Eric’s hair dyed and cut for him to go undercover, so as long as Eric’s hair is changed on screen, which it seems it will be in the minisodes,
I’m not worried at all *shrug*

Maybe that’s what you think. But Bill states in Ep3 of S1 that vampires can not change their appearance… So why is AB cutting and dyeing Eric’s hair since S2? Because he can’t hire a professional expert to make a decent wig or extensions instead of the ugly mop from S1?(BTW, they also cut Godric’s hair for S2) Moreover, is AB going to change Eric’s hair in each of the seasons of TB?

IMO this is clearly another inconsistency of AB who is always underestimating the memory of viewers.

          • April 25, 2010 at 6:24 am

Didn’t AB state that only 5% of the shows veiwers where also book readers??? Maybe he thought that those 95% were idiots and that they wouldn’t catch on with the ‘massive’ changes like the hair (and i say they are massive because its the character phsyical presence in the show that is getting changed).

You can’t have it both ways (i remember talking about this with Sunnynala and Rygee (Ancient Pythonsis) ages ago) You either have everything grow back after it’s been cut, al la Anne Rice’s world, or you have everything stay how you want it. Jessica can’t have bits growing back, but having other vampires hair changing all the time. Who ever is overseeing this part of the show really needs to step up and do a better job.

i just hope that by season 4 and the amnesiac eric shower scene he has returned to being totally blond and is all tustled like after he’d flown to see QSA in season 2.

i’d make him fly everywhere if thats what it did to his hair.

We all know and understand that you and your BL’s partners that sent you the link don’t care because at this moment you all are too angry with AB and CH and are just spitting poison around because Eric rules (as always). So, don’t forget to take your daily medication and to rest for at least 3 years until TB and the SVM don’t decompensate your mood anymore. Good Luck!!

well aren’t you just a ray of sunshine. You do realize that you’re telling someone to get a life, meanwhile you waste your time reading and commenting on things you don’t care about.

Have you guys had a look at the new picture of Alex at the premier of Metropia??? Does it look like there is more Blond in it then then a few weeks ago???

This is for you, SVB. A recent Wall Street Journal article about True Blood’s use of real wolves relates (and I quote):

“They needed to wrap the episodes before the wolves shed their winter coats: ‘We had to work on their timeline,’ says executive producer Gregg Fienberg. A lighter summer coat would make the 120-pound gray wolves, cast in werewolf roles, look smaller and less menacing. ‘WE CAN’T SUDDENLY HAVE WOLVES THAT LOOK DIFFERENT.’”

    Emphasis added. Irony 100% original.
