Maybe it’s just as simple as it looks. I guess they are reiterating the fact that shapeshifters shift into animals. And they just happened to choose flamingos. I don’t think there’s anything more to read into here, lol.

I think it’s this simple too. I think it’s just a pretty poster referencing the fact there are shapeshifters in True Blood, and they can take the form of any animal they have had contact with. Since there are lots of flamingos available, there’s no reason they can’t shift into flamingos. And possibly it was designed by someone who likes the song “Pretty Flamingo”.

I like it. I think it is amusing and effective and a nice change from the darkness and blood associated with vampires.

Now, if they pictured a PLASTIC pink flamingo with the tagline “Blow-up Doll” THEN I’d be on board!

HBO needs to hire a new marketing firm. Wah wah.

Why flamingos? I’ve been trying all morning to figure it out. There must be more to it. They’ve already had a shifter poster with the dog, fly, and bull–are they trying to cram in as many animals as possible to refer to shifters or are the birds symbolic of something?

Maybe, like the flamingos, there are many shapeshifters. Maybe the zoo is full of them? Or, maybe like waiting, the poster sucks?

  6. April 29, 2010 at 12:12 am

Could there be flamingos at the aquarium? Maybe the aquarium is at the zoo?

Maybe they’re trying to enforce how different shifters and the weres are?

But it seemed all the other posters could have represented a main character and, therefore, *some* kind of overall theme. If this one doesn’t, then there’s no theme and it makes them all seem even more disjoined. I mean it’s supposed to be an advertising “campaign” right? Bizarre-ish-ness.

I know it’s kind of early but maybe they’re suggesting the shifters are coming out? I mean, why have a sign with “don’t feed the shifters” if the shifters aren’t out? I only just now started watching the series (I’ve been skipping over the porno parts but I keep seeing continuity errors and keep wanting to laugh at Bill, so I don’t know how long this will last), so I don’t know if in Ball’s world the shifters have come out yet. But it was an idea I wanted to throw out.

    • April 29, 2010 at 2:48 am

[I know it’s kind of early but maybe they’re suggesting the shifters are coming out? I mean, why have a sign with “don’t feed the shifters” if the shifters aren’t out?]

That’s *exactly* what I thought when I saw the poster. The shifters haven’t come out yet in TB.

But maybe they’re just trying to make sure casual viewers of the show are aware that there are shapeshifters in the world-not just vampires.

Well… I think they are forgetting that the common viewers are people who don’t have the time or the interest to search for such deep meanings and interpretations 🙄 . But anyway, I made my own little research and I just found some interesting details. And I think they are giving more than only one message with the Pink Flamingos. One with the color, and the other with the animal (and perhaps linked with its color, too).

Roseus is a Latin word meaning “rosy” or “pink.” Lucretius used the word to describe the dawn in his epic poem On the Nature of Things (“De Rerum Natura”).

The color Pink itself is a combination of red and white. Pink is a softer, less violent red. Pink is seen as the sweet side of red. While red stirs up passion and action, studies have shown that large amounts of pink can create physical weakness in people. In some cultures pink is the color of little girls. Pink for men goes in and out of style. Most people still think of pink as a feminine, delicate color. Perhaps there is a tie-in between this physical reaction and the color’s association with the so-called weaker sex. Both red and pink denote love but while red is hot passion, pink is romantic and charming. Pink can be used to convey playfulness (hot pink flamingos) and tenderness (pastel pinks).

Pink is also linked to the gay community. Men imprisoned in nazi concentration camps on accusations of homosexuality or same-sex sexual activity were forced to wear a pink triangle under Nazi rule. Nowadays, an inverted pink triangle is often worn with pride. A Dutch newsgroup about homosexuality is called nl.roze (roze being the Dutch word for pink), while in Britain, Pink News is a leading gay newspaper and online news service. There is a magazine called Pink for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) community which has different editions for various metropolitan areas. In France Pink TV is an LGBT cable channel. In business, the pink pound or pink dollar refers to the spending power of the LGBT community. Advertising agencies sometimes call the gay market the pink economy.

In Shamanism a Flamingo totem or the Flamingo as a spirit guide means the power of illusion, shapeshifting, work with group consciousness and clear sighted. In Native American beliefs its meaning is journey, migration and wisdom. The Flamingo spiritual meaning is one of awareness. It has also been asserted that people with pink auras are those who strongly desire romantic relationships.

On a deeper metaphysical perspective, Pink Flamingos are sometimes seen as personal symbols of “alchemical realization”. It has a lot to do with the fact that pink is seen as the color which results from a blending (welding together) of the upper and the lower end of the human energy body. White (sahasrara / crown ckakra) and red (muladhara / root chakra) are equal to the “Pinkness Of Alchemical Realization”, which in turn also equal “The Living”.

I want to highlight (for Sunny’s benefit… I know she will LOVE this possible relationship 😛 ) that in the “Tarot of the Dead”, Monica Knighton explores divination from beyond the grave. Inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead, a holiday honoring deceased friends and family, this deck blends Mexican tradition with European divination, and, the card of the 5th major Arcana, The Hierophant Tarot card, show The Hierophant siting in a lawn chair among Pink Flamingos. The Hierophant represent a holy man, its theme is the Order and it’s related with organizations, groups, laws and rules, conventional thinking, leader of the people, spiritual teacher, seeking spiritual enlightenment, and god’s laws on earth. The Hierophant astrological correspondence is Taurus – The Bull (who represents the willpower and the logic…). Some say that Taurus the Earthly bull may seem an odd sign for a holy man, but it makes sense if you understand that the Hierophant’s purpose is to bring the spiritual down to Earth and deals with worldly problems. He is well suited to do this because, like all Taureans, he strives to create harmony and peace in the midst of a crisis (when it’s positive). BUT, the Hierophant’s only problem is that, like the Bull, he can be stubborn and hidebound. At his best, he is wise and soothing, at his worst, he is an unbending traditionalist. Obviously, this is way more deeper than my very superficial and mixed interpretation about the relationship between the Tarot of the Dead’s “Hierophant between Flamingos” card and it’s Taurus’ Bull” correspondence, but I wanted to add it to help Sunny a little with her quest in finding clues for her Maryann theory 😉 .

Oh, I almost forgot to say that for me it is obvious they also wanted to highlight the contrast between The Living (shifters, weres) and The Dead (vampires), because as I said above, Pink Flamingos’ methaphysical meaning is “The Living” and are also related to the sun. It’s the kind of animal you can easely relate with a bright and sunny day.

*bowing down to the awesomeness that is Gigi!* 🙂

Awesome info! That bit about “Pink Flamingos are sometimes seen as personal symbols of “alchemical realization” made me think a little bit about how AB kept saying that the theme of S3 is figuring out who you are. Perhaps that could be tied in with it.

I googled pink flamingos too and I found information about a movie called Pink Flamingos…”a 1972 American transgressive comedy”. I’d never heard of it before, but it seems fairly interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Flamingos

Honestly, I could see some resemblences between the information I found about that movie and things I’ve noticed about TB. It seems like it was supposed to have been a ‘shocking’ type of movie with lots of ‘taboo’ stuff in it. It seems like a lot of times that what AB and company want to have with TB too….throwing stuff in there not because it fits but for the shock value of it…pointless orgies anyone?

I’m sure it’s probably more a case of ‘sometimes a rock is just a rock’ but all this trying to make something out of nothing is pretty fun sometimes, lol.

Transgressive doesn’t even begin to describe ‘Pink Flamingos’… LOL!!

If you’re new to the John Waters corpus, I’d suggest starting with Polyester or Hairspray. There’s less poop involved! 😉

Gigi, you are a great source of information, and you even managed to bring in my favorite True Blood topic, alchemy. I am awe struck now, but I know I will be referring back to this information later. Thanks.

On a side note I have these books on my ipod and listening to them on the way to and from work I almost hope for heavy traffic – only to day dream in sookie’s world for a while longer! Also, I have decided who of my friends/coworkers would be vamps/were’s etc…. hey its a hobby!

    Gigi, I am overwhelmed! Seriously.

Not to pick a nit, but weres change into one animal, be it wolf, fox, panther, whatever. True shifters like Sam can change into any animal. So how many shapeshifters do we have in True Blood? One…….yeah…..one. Sam. I think Daphne was another, but ooooops! Daphne’s all gone now.

Remember now that Sam’s family and his younger brother will have their story line on the next season. Ausiello also suggested that Laffayette’s new boyfriend is some sort of supe: http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2010/04/28/ask-ausiello-spoilers-24-smallville-greys/

Well I didn’t see THAT spoiler. His name is Jesus… how much you want to bet he says he’s originally from Miami?

That solves that mystery, as far as I’m concerned. Lafayette’s love interest is a shifter.

But it still doesn’t change the fact that the totally phoned this poster in. It’s so obviously photoshopped it’s embarrassing.

Back to our regularly scheduled program. LOL.

Incidentally, that means they do actually appear to be going along with the poster per character theme. Seems some posters, however, might refer to characters we haven’t met yet.

Kind of makes me want to re-evaluate the “Get Your Fill” poster. That’s the only one so far that wasn’t really obvious. (At least, not to me.)

IMO all the poster campaign sucks. BIG TIME.

It seems they don’t want to spend on it because they are spending everything on the viral marketing campaign of the webisodes/minisodes…

Too true. I mean, I see where they’re going with it conceptually… and now that we’ve cracked the code on this one, it’s actually kind of cute.

But the image quality is total crap. They could have made it look like a postcard, or done something really charming and original with it. Instead, it just looks like some stock photo that someone manipulated on their laptop during their lunch break.

Still… I like that they’re giving us clues. You know HBO arranged for Ausiello to dispense that spoiler on the same day this poster was released for a reason.

Okay, I guess I take back a little of my scorn if Jesus is from Miami;) But, really, shouldn’t we have posters for the main characters before we start on the lesser ones that haven’t even been introduced?

I wonder if whoever Eric’s seeking revenge on gets drained – GYF?

[But, really, shouldn’t we have posters for the main characters before we start on the lesser ones that haven’t even been introduced?]

Well, I guess technically it does have to do with each character’s storyline. In this case it’s related to Lafayette. We’re still missing Jason and Tara. I wonder what those will be.

      • 47 MASpencer
        April 29, 2010 at 4:20 am

Well, if that’s the case, then GYF was Eric’s poster… not VILF.

Unless they’re giving him two of EVERYTHING this season!!!! 😀

        • 48 VikingLover
          April 29, 2010 at 4:32 am

I still think VILF was referring to Sookie. To me it never made sense that VILF would be Eric because why would he want to f***k himself. lol Well, never mind – don’t answer that! 🙂 But really, it wouldn’t really fit in with his S3 storyline but it fits Sookie’s. Eric is definitely the Vamp Sookie wants to f***k – as do we all.

You took the words right out of my keyboard, VL! I was just thinking that VILF could TOTALLY be Sookie’s poster. Especially because it’s ambiguous enough to appease the BLs… even though we all know what that V really stand for. 😉

Again, there’s that saying: Vengeance is a dish best served cold.

Maybe that’s what “Get your fill” REALLY refers to…

And yes. I rescind the majority of my derision, too. (They still lose points for crappy artwork.) And I also agree that they should have probably stuck to the main characters… but I guess you could consider this to be Lafayette’s poster, too.

“Don’t feed the shapeshifters”… I think Jesus might be trouble.

I’m really liking this theory, MAS.

Re the poster: I too like that they are giving us clues but I’m disappointed with this one. I actually liked the others so I’m surprised by this one – they phoned it in with this one. lol Yep, I agree that Jesus will probably be trouble.

  15. 52 KC
    April 29, 2010 at 5:03 am

Maybe the poster isn’t just about the character, but the season’s storylines. So VILF is Sookie + vampire of choice;). And GYF is Eric and the vampire to be named later upon whom Eric will *dine*. Sam’s is about discovering his family and “true” nature. Bill’s going missing. And then there’s Lafayette and Jesus, I guess…

My gay friends all say the Flamingos are a sign that it’s going to be a very gay focused season Maybe Hoyt’s penguin dicked father could shift into a flamingo.LOL

Why shouldn’t you FEED the shapeshifters? Maybe this is a Gremlins reference and a clue that shifters might not be so nice and docile as we have seen so far.

  18. 55 holby
    April 29, 2010 at 1:59 pm

Okay, I am just going to offer the Occam’s razor here. Please don’t feed the shifters, showing pink flamingos. Flamingos are genetically a white bird. They only turn pink in response to the diet they are FED…shrimp. And in zoos, they are fed an artificial diet (True-Blood, anyone?) in order to keep their color:

    From The Straight Dope.com

Wild flamingos are pink because they eat carotene-containing brine shrimps (one species) or blue-green algae (another species). Lacking such food in zoos, they turn white unless fed caroteniferous substitutes–carrots, beets, or red peppers in the old days, or the additive canthaxanthin today.”

Note, in modern times they feed them a synthetic additive to maintain them!

Nice one Holby! Also kinda makes you think about how vampires get a little pinker right after feeding. Lol, you can tell I’m not a were or shifter type girl, I take everything back to the vamps, haha. 🙂

In the 1970’s Gay men adopted Pink Flamingo’s as a mascot. In the 1980s adult boomers are strapping it to backpacks and kayaks, and traveling with it to Europe, and plopping it on birthday and wedding cakes. In other words, after the bird becomes the ultimate marker for transgressing boundaries, the boomers use it just to cross boundaries of every kind — art, taste, nature, sexuality, space, time
