Joe Manganiello talks about Alcide

Joe Manganiello has given an indepth interview to Fancast in which he gives away a few details about Alcide’s story in season 3 of True Blood.

A few highlights:

How close is the TV version to the character that is in the books?
He’s pretty close as far as the description goes. He’s brought by Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) to bodyguard Sookie because Bill’s (Stephen Moyer) been kidnapped and Sookie believes that werewolves have some information to his whereabouts. So Alcide is brought in after his father’s death to escort Sookie into the underground society of werewolves.

Are the two of them going to get romantic?
All I can say is that bonding happens. They bond.

Tell me more about Alcide’s storyline.
Vampires and werewolves don’t like each other. The terms to which Alicide is summoned, he has to show up against his will. He’s just a guy who wants to live his life and doesn’t want to get wrapped up in all this, but as more and more of the plot unfolds, Alcide hits the point where he winds up seeing some things and finding out some things are going on that he can’t walk away from. Basically the fact of the matter is he’s forced into it because of his father’s death.

Can you give us a preview of some exciting scenes?
People are going to lose their minds. One of the highlights of my week was getting those scripts. There’s going to be a lot of blood this year. They’re going to explain a lot of things that the fans wanted explained.

OH REALLY? Let’s hope so.

Aside from the fact that Alcide’s father is already dead when we meet him, it appears his backstory and general storyline are reasonably close to the books.

I have a feeling he won’t be hanging around for as long as he has in the SVM though – and I’m not losing too much sleep over that.

You can read the full interview HERE.

Hmmm… it looks like they might be throwing book 5 away altogether and squeezing in its individual plotlines wherever they can. Which leaves me wondering 1) if, when, and how we’re going to meet Quinn, and 2) whether Alcide will ever become packmaster, opening up the door for further appearances, or if season 3 is going to be our only real exposure to werewolves.

They can’t ditch Quinn. OMFG they CANNOT.

      I will incite a riot.

But yeah, I did get the impression that Alcide might end up having a smaller overall role than he’s had in the books.

I don’t care for the character of Quinn and if AB does not bring the character on the show it would not upset me. If AB bring the character of Quinn, I hope Quinn become totally different than what CH has written about him.

        Quinn is boring and bland.

I’d like to see Quinn on the show too, there’s a lot they can do with the character. Definitely has potential for both good and bad, which I like. They could just slide Alcide into that role but Quinn would provide them an opportunity to introduce a new supernatural element (weretiger…okay still a were but more exotic) at a point when the audience could be getting ‘over’ the wolves.

you didn’t mention the best part of the interview: when asked for a preview of some exciting scenes, he says, “They’re going to explain a lot of things that the fans wanted explained.” FINALLY!

SVB, the interview link you posted states his answers a little differently.

How close is the TV version to the character that is in the books?
…So Alcide is brought in [because of ] his father’s debt to escort Sookie into the underground society of werewolves.

Tell me more about Alcide’s storyline.
…Basically the fact of the matter is he’s forced into it because of his father’s debt.

Both the answers state DEBT instead of DEATH. Maybe they changed it or something, but if it is debt, it is true to the books, and Quinn should still be introduced at the packmasters challenge. Alcide’s role in Season 3 of TB still sounds the same as in the books, so we should still see the change in his character once he takes on the role as packmaster in the future.

OK, I went through a couple of sites and trueblood-online.com posted “Death” too, instead of “Debt”, which leads me to believe that the interview in Fancast was changed. Hmmm… why do you suppose?

      • May 12, 2010 at 12:17 pm

When I posted this, it definitely said “death” – because I copied and pasted straight from the interview.

They have definitely changed it in just the last couple of hours.

Maybe it was an innocent screw up on their part….but it’s definitely been changed.

Maybe whoever transcribed the interview misheard what Joe said, and the interviewer or someone noticed the error.

    OT, but this:

Did you study construction to prepare?
Actually, I used to work construction. I used to work for a masonry company, which is a construction company that works with stone. I used to do deliveries and demolitions which basically meant that I delivered tons of sand and gravel to job sites. I hauled 100 pound bags of cement and I would jackhammer cinder blocks to put in pools, houses, things like that. I guess it’s art imitating life.

Jackhammers and cement bags? I’m getting a lady boner as I type this. LOL.

      LOL that’s hilarious!

Maybe I missed it, but in what way … I don’t know. I am a civil engineer and I’ve been stationed in enough construction sites and well, if you’re in a leadership role, you tend to still dress really casual, since workers sometimes try to aim some spackles of cement or plaster on the people that boss them around, especially if they’re in a nice suit ;). Alcide is a boss, so, while he’s strong from his shifter thing, it will be completely out of character if he does any of the work himself.

hot men + construction work = MASPENCER WITH A LADY BONER.

        It’s a very simple equation. LOL. 😉

Seriously. I do love a blue-collar man who knows how to use his hands. (which is why I’ve been married to a mechanic for almost 30 years. And you know what they say about mechanics…)

He’s done shooting already 😦 They’re only at episode 10. He spoke in past tense.

I’m probably in the minority here, but I am not looking forward to seeing Quinn on the show. of all the suitors, i always found him to be the most… insufferable? One dimensional? Annoying? I could go on. but again, that is only my opinion!

Now whenever I think of Alcide, I think of a Lumberjack. the Brawny paper towel guy. Blame one of the LJ communities on that, they made a bunch of Alcide/Brawny icons. I know the wolves are supposed to be, uh, hairy dudes, but i am really not a fan of his beard.

I’m not a fan of Quinn either. I was glad Sookie let go of him.

      • May 12, 2010 at 6:38 pm

I don’t like Quinn either. No reason in particular, but I can’t help but find him an intruder in the storyline. His relationship with Sookie really bored me to death and I couldn’t wait for them to break up.
        Plus, I hate that “babe”.

Every picture I see of Joe Manganiello is hotter than the one before. I’ve been forwarding them to all my friends. I’m liking season 3 already, I might miss the storyline because of all the eye-candy!

I think he will be a great Alcide. I read another interview where he said that when he got the call and was told he got the part, he started crying. He also said he is a huge fan of the show and watched the first 2 seasons when they aired. It’s nice to see someone who was cast loves the show and that it means so much to them.

Can’t wait to see him and AS in a scene together, Joe is 6’5 and AS 6’4 and both HOTT.

I’m sure the fact that it means so much to him will show too as he’ll be determined to do the character justice and play the part well. He will be great. Hope he’s in the trailer. The pic of him and Sookie at Club Dead wasn’t enough and it didn’t really look like him. I want to see more of him. MORE!

When I read this interview and Joe was talking about vampires and were’s not getting along…

All I could think about was him and Eric all fired up and the very thought just makes me all hot and bothered.

Alcide is SO not in my good books after DITF, and I really wasn’t keen on JM to play him at first. But now I’m really excited about it, he does seem to have a real passion for the part. I think I warmed to him a bit when I read an interview he gave just after he was cast, and he spoke about being into vampires, werewolves and the supernatural since he was a little kid.

I only knew JM from ‘One Tree Hill’ (maybe not the best show to judge on) and I was sceptical, I imagined more Jeremy Sisto, but he’s won me over too.

[All I could think about was him and Eric all fired up and the very thought just makes me all hot and bothered.]

Poor Sookie caught in between those two when they’re squaring up to each other I feel soooo bad for her!!! Wait, that’s not “bad” I’m feeling, I think it might be…jealousy?!?

I’m really happy for the great opportunity that this role represents for Joe.
If only he could use a pair of GREEN contact lenses… 🙄
(but I think TB´s make-up budget is already commited only for hair coloring products) LMAO!!!

Joe does nothing for me. I think his looks are below average. He makes my skin crawl. I hated his cheesy performances in ER when he was hitting on Sam. Hopefully his acting has improved and his tenure is short.

Ah geez. SVB is going to be upset again. Eric/AS has dark hair still.

Ooo that was interesting, thanks for posting CK.

I guess Bill won’t do anything to the old lady Olivia. I did read in the casting list that Olivia is a were. In that vid we see Bill in an old ladies house but someone is behind him with a gun to his head.

I like that the actress playing Debbie Pelt dyed her hair dark.

Ok so we know the V addicted were’s work for Russell, even come after Sookie. In that vid we see that Bill was in a home with an old lady and a man with a gun, i cant see the mans face though. This has to be right after he is kidnapped bc I thought it will happen after he gets out of Russell’s mansion. So weres probably kidnapped him. Now the hands were small like a womans, so a female that is with the were’s? Isn’t Debbie also a V addicted were and in the books she participated in his torture but we didn’t find out until book 4. Alan did say that Debbie will have a bigger role on his show. I thought all along that we’ll get to see her torture Bill but did she do the actual kidnapping?

Is it just me or does Alan Ballseem to continually cut off his own feet? I get that he needs to be creative in his own right and all… But the point of making a tv show based on books it to pay attention to the freakin’ books, right?!

Some of this I don’t care about (add in or take out, doesn’t matter to me): like Sam & Tara relat. or Jason’s sexcapades, which I could’ve gone my entire life without seeing….

But killing off Alcide’s dad (which can either significantly speed up or take out the Were storyline) and Eric’s maker (which is obviously a big part of book 10, as we now know) was just stupid! *mocking*: “when all else fails, kill off somebody…”

i don’t know how he’s gonna be able to remain with the books for long if he keeps this up.
