True Blood Bus Ads

@LafayetteTB is tweeting the pic below as a new bus ad for True Blood.

Something is seriously WHACK with Eric’s forearm and hand – and if I didn’t know better I would say this was fanart made from the original cast photo.

Not sure if it’s legit or not, but the Vault have posted it so I guess we’ll see.

If it is, it sure looks like the Powers that Be have got the message loud and clear about what we want to see.

see, i saw that on Twitter a couple of hours ago and i thought it was some fan-made photoshoppery. Bill’s head looks more awkward to me than Eric’s weird playdoh hand, lol. well i guess it’s legit then!

Yeah, someone posted this earlier on Twitter and I noticed right away that Eric left arm and hand (especially) really seem “Photoshopped”.

But yet with Bill’s face and how his right arm is positioned differently on Sookie’s arm … it might be another “official” version of the larger one we all analyzed to pieces!

Yeah, I looked at them side-by-side, and Bill and Sookie’s faces and positioning are both different, too. That makes me think it’s probably official instead of a manipulated version of the original. Seems like there are way to many differences– though I’ll admit that Eric’s arm/hand looks a little wonky.

Anyway, if it IS real, I strongly disapprove of the way Bill is gripping Sookie’s arm and shoulder. Ewww.

    *snickers* “playdoh” … good description!

Official or fan-made … either way, it’s still good because of Bill’s reaction and all. Definitely tells the story that True Blood has created.

You would think HBO could do a better photoshop job than that. Other than that, it’s a great picture. Bill and Eric are looking all Vampire and hot. Sookie leaning back against Bill looking all seductive.

Looks like it could be fan-made, but nonetheless, I like what it’s implying.

Kind of OT – does anyone know if TB is done filming? I remembering hearing something about shooting episode 10 about a week ago. I ask because I’ve been seeing photos of Alexander apparently back home in Sweeden. I swear, if Eric disappears for the last episode AGAIN, I will be very, very unhappy.

    • May 18, 2010 at 12:05 am

Good question and I have been wondering about myself.
Last year it was June before they finished filming but I think there were writers strike issues that delayed things.

Keep in mind that they really do alot of filming out of sequence. Location availability and things of that nature. Plus it looks like they have not cast for all of the casting calls. *Keeps us on our toes, huh?*

We’ve seen casting sides for each episode through 10, so I think that they haven’t started 11 or 12 yet. Maybe Eric isn’t heavily featured in Episode 10. I really wish he’d hurry up and get back, because those ash clouds from the Iceland volcano are starting up again and he just can’t get stranded in Sweden. I MUST have my Eric next season!

It’s funny because Stephen Moyer is away now too, he was seen in London this week. I know someone who couldn’t get to London this weekend but luckily on Monday finally flew out. I’m sure they both should be ok to come back. They have some time and they can always just work around it I guess and film other scenes first.

I remember that they start shooting episode 10 on may 7th. They said each ep takes about 2 weeks. But yeah they definitely should still be filming. Yeah, I saw the pics of AS in Sweden and hopefully he will just be there a short period of time. Maybe they are still filming episode 10 which is likely since takes about 2 weeks and he might’ve done all his scenes. I guess let’s see when he comes back, but I think he has enough time to get back for last 2 episodes.

It must be a fake. There is just too much weirdness going on in the photo for it to be real, and Eric looks like he has a baby hand! WTH? The idea is a great one but the execution is horrendous. When baby hands attack!

Hoo boy, I HOPE that isn’t real.

  13. May 18, 2010 at 2:12 am

Looking at it closely, there’s definitely a very obvious line of demarcation on Bill’s face – like the original had him wearing a different expression, so they snipped a more appropriate expression from another photo and pasted it. It’s from maybe mid-chin on up, and it’s especially noticeable in the hair. Not to mention the front part of the face is paler that the back part, toward his temple and ear.

This has to be fan art. I can’t imagine HBO putting this out there; they usually have a bang-up visual ad team.

    • May 18, 2010 at 2:23 am

Aha. THAT’S why Bill’s face/hair looks so weird… and it looks like he’s got some weird double chin thing happening too.

      Yeah, it’s probably a fake. If not… well… just… NO.

    • May 18, 2010 at 2:33 am

Gah, but at the same time, his shoulder is positioned totally differently, and Sookie’s face and hair look different. And especially where Sookie is concerned, I don’t see why someone making fan art would bother to change her face if it didn’t need to be changed. So maybe this image WAS created by HBO using a separate version of the same scene.

      I don’t know. It’s still crap… though I can’t fault the idea.

      • May 18, 2010 at 2:38 am

Are there other versions of the picture floating around the net? Or just the one released by HBO? Because if there haven’t been any others released/leaked (that we know of), I’d agree that this most likely originates with HBO… Then again, it’s very hard for me to believe that they’d put an image with this many flaws blown up 100x on a bus, for everyone to see in high def.

Maybe this is a rough proof draft. God, one can only hope.

  14. 36 nerd
    May 18, 2010 at 2:59 am

well, i pulled it into photoshop myself and picked at it a little, plus i pulled up the original and did some comparisons. sookie and bill have definite different faces, and her face and hair is kind of smoothed out. airbrushed? and i feel as though both of their heads are disproportionate to their bodies. i have no idea how Bill is sitting that way, and although it’s not physically impossible, it is awkward and probably painful. i think it’s the angle of his near shoulder that really bugs me. and with her head being back, even if its just that wee bit, and both shoulders flung back Sookie’s posing looks improbable and painful as well. her head is pointed right at us, but her body is angled out.
the only thing changed on Eric is his left arm below the bicep, obviously; it’s been scaled and rotated, or perhaps even repainted entirely. so, whoever did it obviously knows *how* to use the lasso tool in photoshop, and i have no clue why they didn’t bother to enlarge the hand too. oh, and the wolf? idk what is up with that ear. one is noticeably larger than the other.

TL;DR : and with that, perhaps you all now understand better why I chose “nerd” as my handle.

  15. May 18, 2010 at 3:01 am

As bad as it is, the background is completely different–lighting, snakes, vines, skulls, and branches. I can’t believe a fan could do all that.

    • May 18, 2010 at 5:31 am

This pic makes no sense to me. How could the setting be so masterfully done and Bill and Eric turn out so amateurish?

I don’t think this is real Guys. I saw the other version (the full cast) posted in one of the subway stations here in NYC last week. I think it was on Thursday that I saw it. This one looks odd to me. Eric’s hand looks completely different than the other version – and it lacks the definition and detail of the other one. Plus, I could swear I’ve seen a similar photo of AP somewhere else (face that is). It looks kind of familiar. Also, this new pic looks kind of provocative for a bus ad.

  17. 40 Gigi
    May 18, 2010 at 4:16 am

If it’s from HBO, is the worst work I’ve ever seen. If you can zoom it, you can watch that Eric hand’s isn’t his and has the size of one of Sookie (LOL), and around his shoulders you can watch the difference of color of the background between the layers. The worst work was on Billy. His face is completely a montage. In this pic you can see how his new face’s montage has a different color (from the bangs till his chin) as it was put over the original one:

Why would TB want to make a BUS size poster with all these terrible quality montage (so that even more people notice these horrors) and with such little letters on it that no one can read them while a bus is running…? LMAO!!!

It’s cool and a great work if it’s from a fan, but definitely it’s a very low quality work to be official.

    F.A.K.E. 😛

sorry, OT, I found this summary on Netflix for Season 3 and needed to share:

    True Blood: Season 3
    (2010) TV-MA
The conflicted vampires of rural Louisiana continue their disarming blend of eerie charm and violent bloodlust in the third season of this acclaimed HBO drama produced by Alan Ball (American Beauty). As barmaid Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) considers a relationship with vampire Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård), she also confronts werewolves and learns the truth about her own supernatural gift of reading minds.

      YES!!! 😆

    • May 18, 2010 at 4:35 am

WHOA. That was ridiculously unexpected. But wait– why does Netflix have the summary for season 3 already? HBO must really have their ducks in a row…

      • May 18, 2010 at 5:05 am

Now I vaguely recall that we came across this Netflix summary around Xmas time and we concluded Netflix made it up themselves because it was before S3 was even written. I’m sure someone posted it.

Let me go back and see if it’s the same one….

        • May 18, 2010 at 5:07 am

How is that even possible, though? They would have only just started writing the scripts by then, right?

        • May 18, 2010 at 5:09 am

I’ve just searched the comments and I can’t find it. Now I’m thinking this was on one of my forums….duh can’t remember! But I’m almost 100% positive that this was around at the beginning of the year….

          • May 18, 2010 at 5:14 am

Hmmm. Slightly less exciting that way.

Still, SOMEONE had to provide that info. And even assuming it HAS been around that long, I am shocked– completely SHOCKED– that it didn’t make tidal waves in the BL fandom. Unless they’ve just chosen to ignore it as mendacious tomfoolery on behalf of Eric-loving Netflix employees. LOL.

            • May 18, 2010 at 5:23 am

The interesting part about it though is that everything else seems to be on point. We know the werewolves are fact, and we also know that Ball has said Sookie will be finding more about her powers in S3.

And you’re right, this had to have come from somewhere. And it’s quite a big porky to be making up, if that’s what they did. Thinking about how S2 ended it would be really going out on a limb if that were purely speculation.

Besides, Bill and Sookie are going to be back together by the end of season 3!

              • May 18, 2010 at 5:30 am

Yeah, no one at Netflix made that business up. I was pulling for some E/S action all last season, and even I was shocked to have upcoming developments confirmed in such a forthright manner. “Considers a relationship with” sounds an awful lot more legit than “has sexy dreams about”…

Anyway, I hope the writers don’t intend to rob us of Season 4 goodness. I thought this whole season would serve to build up tension for a season-long money shot next year.

Whatever happens, though, it sounds like we’re going to be getting a lot more action than we bargained for. And I LIKE.

                  May 18, 2010 at 6:09 am

I think they confirmed AE for S4 and it wouldn’t be the same if Sookie didn’t take him in. So I figure they HAVE to show a deeper connection somehow between E/S, he basically has to do right by her or else it will be very unbelievable if she were to take him in. Well I hope AB realizes this at least. Like I said in the “and yet another promo” post, it all looks very positive for E/S to at least form a friendship and trust and for her to look at Eric in a new light. This is also just from trailers that we’ve seen so far so I can just imagine once we see the show. We see Eric looking out for Sookie and giving her advice and telling her not to underestimate herself and her life is too valuable to throw away. He comes to protect her and most likely takes a bullet for her and fights a were. The best part is that unlike the books, seems like Eric is not the one who will ask Sookie to go search for Bill. He cares enough to have someone go with Sookie to Jackson and take care of her. Plus we see he shows up at Alcide’s apt to most likely further look out for her. He is probably worried about Sookie getting into trouble and why we think Sookie is trying to show Eric she can handle it. I’m curious if he’ll also help her out with the whole bandaged neck incident.

The icing on the cake would be for Eric to fix her house or do something for her that is similar. Just 25 days until we start finding out.

Ooo… I hope Netflix’s synopsis is true. I’d love to see some real development in E/S friendship. It has been a long time coming! I’m curious to see how the B/S thing cools off. I doubt it will happen like in the books, I think TB Bill will remain very much in the foreground to appease all the BLs.

The bus ad looks suspiciously fake. It just seems unlikely that HBO would hire artists who do not have an eye for anatomy, proportion and composition.

Even when it’s a clear marketing strategy in order to make that people save it, so when it arrive they can add it automatically to their list, I highly doubt they made it up. Because they can’t risk themselves to receive a lawsuit for be making a misleading ad of a product that has copyrights and brings royalties to its owner (HBO).

That is really crappy manipulation. If HBO did it, then they did it on purpose… But chosing it for a bus it’s not very intelligent. That photo is very disgusting. They are not that good a manipulation, in the adds, but this is not even amateur, I find it difficult to think it’s not fanmade.

    • May 18, 2010 at 2:04 pm

Oh, I’ve been jonesing for spoilers, too, Sunny!!! But I’m betting that they’re staying really tight-lipped about the last couple of episodes, so as not to give away too much info about season 4 before season 3 even starts. This is what makes me wonder whether they actually ARE done (or at least ALMOST done) filming. We heard about the episode 10 stuff a while back now, so it wouldn’t entirely suprise me.

If memory serves, I don’t think we got any info about last season’s finale until it showed up on HBO’s viewing schedule. But I could be wrong about that…

It seems to take about three weeks on average to film an ep and it’s been about that long since we heard the title of ep 10. April 30 was when “I Smell a Rat” became ‘official’ but The Vault had the info some time before that.

They started filming episode 10 on May 7th though, so they probably are still filming it then if it takes 3 weeks. I thought 2 and that they might be almost done with 10 but if its 3 then they still have a little bit more time. I found the info for episode 19 on april 21st, so I’m thinking that info for episode 11 has to be up real soon. I’m surprised it isn’t already, unless they are waiting lets say a week or two after the 10th to start shooting.

Okay, so I had occasion to really study the subway poster as I waited for my train to arrive. First of all, the official poster is badly photoshopped. Oh, and it’s weirdly iridescent, so because the pictures is so dark, you really have to get close to really see it. If you look at the position Pam is in and then look at her legs, well, she looks like she must be severed in in two. AP’s head is too big for her body and is obviously stuck on there. So, I have a feeling that is the official bus poster. Time will soon tell. I’m eying every bus that goes by. Boy, HBO must have really been cutting corners when they hired the agency that did these!

  28. 80 KittyKat

I guess they decided it was better to have a steady flow of bad promos just to keep people talking than a few select good ones. In a way, it may work, that and airing out all sorts of previews that are focusing on different things. Everyone likes to see how things are really filmed, and previews never hurt, even if I do think some of them are deliberately misleading.

That doesn’t even deserve its own post. In a storyline riddled with blanks, Sam’s minisode managed to fill in NOTHING. Did we really need a two minute minisode to explain to us how pissed he was?????

Funny this should come up tonight because I was just looking at the same thing tonight. It looks like Eric and Ulfric may have been berserkers, but I’m also toying with the idea that Russell headed up a gang of berserkers that killed Ulfric and took over. I wasn’t going to post about this until Thor’s day, but I think I’ll try to get it up tonight.

Renee, was Eric wearing a wolf pelt in his Viking flashback, do you recall? And was it only berserkers that did that, or is it more of a general Viking thing?

I’m not sure how they’re going to present this, but given what little I know from Wikipedia, I would say it’s more likely that berserkers (who will probably be portrayed on the show as actually being werewolf warriors) plundered, looted, and murdered Eric’s entire kingdom. And Russell somehow helped them, or commanded and organized them.

Still not sure, though, how Ulfric will figure into the mix. Maybe there’s going to be a pack rivalry introduced that goes way back (hence the season opener “Bad Blood”), and Eric’s father was on the losing side? I’m not saying he was a werewolf, of course– but maybe he was part of some secret society that allowed him to associate with them somehow. It seems that werewolves would be excellent warriors, and a great asset to any kingdom because of it.

Anyway, I think it’s fair to say that Eric doesn’t hate ALL werewolves, or he wouldn’t have sent Alcide to protect and chaperone Sookie. Oooooh, the possibilities!

              • May 19, 2010 at 4:43 am

I don’t know more than is on Wikipedia, but it says the wolf pelts were a distinguishing feature of the berserkers. It could play out as you described. In my post, I took a slightly different view, but I need more info before committing to it.

FWIW, here’s a quick run down of how I think it’s shaping up.

                1. Eric Bloodaxe, the Norse king who ruled Northumbria (the ancestral home of the Stackhouses) seems to be the inspiration for Eric.

                2. His father is Harald Fairhair. He is identified with the Ulfheðnar, (men in wolfskins), which would be berserkers. He seems to have been one of the earliest rulers to use berserker gangs to shore up his power. The name ‘Ulfric,’ meaning Ruler of Wolves or Power of the Wolf. So Eric’s father appears to have been a werewolf pack leader.

                3. I think Russell is going to kill Ulfric, and become the new pack leader, which is how a vampire develops such a strange association with werewolves.

                4. This means that Alcide’s story is going to parallel what happened to Eric when he was still human.

                5. Eric was a werewolf?? OMG!!!

                • May 19, 2010 at 5:42 am

Hang on, you lost me – how does Russell – a vampire, become a pack leader? Surely it’s not just a matter of killing the packleader and you get to take over no matter what flavor of icecream you are?
(sorry I haven’t read this whole thread yet I might have missed something *hangs head*)

And if they make Eric a were when he was human I really will LOSE MY SHIT FOR REAL.

                  You’re freaking me out Renee!

                  • May 19, 2010 at 6:01 am

I don’t know how, but I’ll bet my bottom dollar on it. Wasn’t there a spoiler about unusulla long lived werewolves? Sounds like Russell promises Them V in exchange for their loyalty.

At the risk of making your head explode, I think AB will give Eric an ex who is a witch, just like Eric Bloodaxe. She’ll probably turn out to be Hallow. I’ve always thought there was much more to that story than Sookie ever discovered. I just didn’t know how closely Ball was going to follow Eric I. If he’s going the historical route with his father, he’d be crazy to pass up the wife.

                    • May 19, 2010 at 9:49 am

I could actually buy Hallow being an ex. Would make a helluva lot more sense than her just showing up out of the blue and demanding his money and his gracious plenty. Not that I can’t understand why she might do that….but still, it seemed kind of improbable without some sort of history between them.

I always just figured Hallow had her coven and they lived along side everyone else. I didn’t get the impression that she just came into town all of a sudden. Holly knew Hallow, though Sookie understandably wouldn’t have known about her as she didn’t even know there were witches. All the supes knew about each other, even before the vamps came out. Hhow could anyone miss Eric? I just thought Hallow became ambitious, wanted to take over Fangtasia and avail herself of the GP while she was at it.

Eric’s wife in the books was his late brother’s wife and he had a few children with her. Now what Alan will come up with, who knows, but I’ll be disappointed if Hallow was his wife. It would be Lorena/Bill all over again.

Oh my… Renee, I’ll tell you that my own flight of fancy took me to the “Eric was a werewolf” conclusion (which wouldn’t be THAT out-of-the-blue since we did have Jake Purifoy in the books, and if Eric didn’t go “berserk” when he killed Royce, well, I don’t know WHAT that was).

                  However… that just CAN’T BE! (!!!!!)

I’m still leaning toward the possibility that his father had an amicable, friend-of-the-pack relationship with one faction of werewolves… and that some type of insurgency among the Weres
(led or organized by Russell of course) led to him being betrayed and killed, along with with much of his kingdom.

In short: I think TB is going to break the wolves down into long-warring factions of “good guys” and “bad guys.” Ulfric had allegiance with the good guys… so the bad guys killed his ass.

Or… Eric was a werewolf. And I will keel over and die. LOL.

                  • May 19, 2010 at 1:20 pm

LOL! In the light of day with a coulpe cups of caffeine in me, I’ll qualify my position to say you may be right It could be good weres vs bad ones. Berserker gangs did become royal bodygards, but with Ulfric’s name and Eric wearing wolf pelts, it certainly seems to be to be where AB is going. If Eric wasn’t a were, he must have been the first human berserker because he is definitely being portrayed as one.

Well, my question now is what the symbolism of the animal pelts is in this series– we were wondering about that with Yvetta and Sophie-Anne, and now Eric. Does it suggest antipathy, or hint at association with the shifter/were in question?

For example, if Yvetta is a werefox wearing a fox pelt, don’t we think that’s kind of twisted? LOL.

Then again, in Eric’s case the wolf pelt could symbolize werewolves he’s killed in battle. Still kind of gross though… I can’t help but think of the skinsuit from ‘Silence of the Lambs.’ LOL!

                    • May 19, 2010 at 2:36 pm

Now that I’ve had 3 cups of coffee, let’s see if I can write a comprehensible message. I don’t think SA was wearing pelts because she’s a friend of the pack, but I think Eric was. Or he was himself a wolf. S1 when Pam was passing out flyers in Merlotte’s, there was a berserker on it in the place of a Fangtasia logo. I’ve got a pic posted.

Also, to add, there’s this backstory, which TB gave him without any illuminating context:

[Born 1046, made Vampire 1077. As a teenager in ninth century Scandinavia, Eric joined with a rogue band of warriors who refused to swear allegiance to any kingdom, because, in his own words, “My destiny is to answer to no man. Eric quickly became the leader of the group, which was briefly infamous for marauding the coast of what is now Germany and Poland, until they mysteriously vanished after a battle in 1077.]

Now, at first blush, that history sounds REALLY bad… but when you couple it with his royal background, it also makes NO sense. UNLESS, someone (perhaps a werewolf, or Russell himself, acting through the werewolves) moved in on his father’s territory and attempted to force Eric to swear fealty to a new King.

Natch, Eric refused– and escaped (either thought dead or exiled), resigned to a life of piracy with this band in order to survive. The “battles” (which would otherwise be unnecessary for a bunch of free agents, right?) were his attempts at winning back his kingdom– lending the story a very Braveheart-y flavor, and effectively removing all insinuations of douchiness from Eric’s backstory.

You can put me on the record as being 100 percent behind this theory. And the whole notion of berserkers– who, according to Wikipedia were “ravenous men who loot, plunder, and kill indiscriminately”– fits perfectly into this, if they are explained as being werewolves who were THOUGHT to be superhuman soldiers.

But I still think Weres were used as agents of an overthrow, or that they seized Eric’s kingdom themselves with Russell’s help. I don’t think that Ulfric WAS one… though it’s certainly not out of the question.

Ooooh, and what if Russell was somehow involved in Godric’s choice to turn Eric??? (Either as Godric’s maker, or his “boss” at the time?)

There’d be something immensely cruel about that. It would be Russell’s way of FORCING fealty onto Eric– because as a vampire, he would have no choice but to swear allegiance to him.

                    • May 19, 2010 at 2:43 pm

I agree completely with everything except the last bit. I explained why I think Eric identifies himself as a berserker above.

I also think you’re a frickin’ genius for seeing thr Eric Russell thing so early on.

Wow, interesting stuff Guys! I can’t get behind the idea of Eric being a werewolf – for some reason this bothers me. It it happens then okay but I’d rather not. I do like the idea of the wolves being royal guards/Ulfric having some connection to them/perhaps they turned on him or Russell helped an enemy faction take over the kingdom, etc. Very interesting!

{Eric refused– and escaped (either thought dead or exiled), resigned to a life of piracy with this band in order to survive. I’m going to say it’s closer to this. I don’t think we’ll see any douchiness in his past – especially judging from how loyal his men were to him. From some reason I get the impression that Godric and Russell were enemies. Judging from how much Eric loved Godric, I don’t think Russell had anything to do with Godric turning Eric.

When all is said and done, I think we will find that Eric is a man of impeccable integrity, completely free of hypocrisy and honorable and just in all of his dealings. It HAS to be this way as a direct contrast to Bill’s utter corruption. It’s been hard to discern these facts through the gauze of false narratives but the blinders will have to be stripped off sooner or later so that the audience can be fully engaged with the battle and fully cognizant of just what is at stake. Anyway, are we sure that’s a berserker on the leaflets? Looks like a generic demon picture to me, but I’m totally unfamiliar with this stuff, so…

Either way, there’s a very good case for the berserker connection even WITHOUT the leaflets– what with Eric’s pelt, and his father’s name and all. Exciting!

Since you mentioned Odin… this may not mean anything, but remember Andy’s drunken story to Jason about “in the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is King?”

Isn’t Odin known as the one-eyed god?

I have no idea how this might tie into anything, but it seems awfully random not to have been foreshadowing SOMETHING. I remember thinking that even as I watched that episode the first time.

                      From Wikipedia’s Odin entry:

In the poem Völuspá, a völva tells Odin of numerous events reaching far into the past and future, including his own doom. The Völva describes creation, recounts the birth of Odin by his father Borr and his mother Bestla and how Odin and his brothers formed Midgard from the sea. She further describes the creation of the first human beings – Ask and Embla – by Hœnir, Lóðurr and Odin.

Amongst various other events, the Völva mentions Odin’s involvement in the Æsir-Vanir War, the oedipism of Odin’s eye at Mímir’s Well, the death of his son Baldr. She describes how Odin is slain by the wolf Fenrir at Ragnarök, the subsequent avenging of Odin and death of Fenrir by his son Víðarr, how the world disappears into flames and, yet, how the earth again rises from the sea. She then relates how the surviving Æsir remember the deeds of Odin.

Keyphrases of the second paragraph: oedipism of Odin’s eye, Odin is slain by the wolf, subsequent avenging of Odin… BY HIS SON.

Very cool, MAS. Yesterday on my blog I connected Eric with Odin’s son, Thor. So in both the Christian and Norse mythologies, Eric is the son of the ‘All Father.” Odin is very self-sacrificing. He gave up his eye to see the future so that he could help mankind and he hanged on a tree for 9 days to discover how to read Runes for the same reason.

You know, these Odin parallels make me think that Eric may not be a werewolf-turned-vampire… but maybe RUSSELL is. (Assuming the role of Fenrir in this case.)

If he was some kind of werewolf BEFORE his turning, it would stand to reason that he might retain that position even after– perhaps for all eternity, due to his immortality.

Serena, it could be this too. Didn’t Pam say something about Ladies Night to Royce? It could be that at first glance this is what it represents but then at a second glance it was foreshadowing for Eric’s story.

MAS, I was thinking this too, and that Russell is related to this dude: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egill_Skallagr%C3%ADmsson

Well, apparently is was prophesied to Odin that his son Víðarr (Norse for “vengeance”) would kill Fenrir by “stabbing him in the heart”– which sounds an awful lot like staking. That said, I’m not sure whether Russell is going to be killed at the end of this… in fact, it looked to me like TALBOT was being set up as the conduit for Eric’s vengeance.

Anyway, I don’t expect the parallels to be exact, and in all likelihood it will be a mashup of several Norse mythologies. Even so, the Odin parallels are practically inevitable– Eric’s very appearance brings Thor to mind, as Renee pointed out. And with all of the speculation about AS auditioning for that role in the upcoming Marvel movie, it’s not suprising that Ball and company would be inspired to follow that type of path.

Yeah thats true, its probably a mix of a lot of different mythologies and histories, plus there is also the Saint Eric reference from Season 1.

Yes MAS, Eric seems to be wearing a wolf pelt in his flashback:

Renne, I don’t know if Eric was a werewolf in TB, but I always have known that Alcide and Eric are parallels on the books. I have always wanted that Eric will be Sookie’s HEA. And I know some people can’t stand the idea that Eric will not be Sookie’s HEA, and also think that after DITF, Alcide’s is out of the race. But I said it once and I have to repeat now, ESPECIALLY after DITF: IF CH will ever want to use another character as HEA for Sookie, she could easily use Alcide.

(No matter that she had said that Alcide made something devious, because actually she already had been saying everywhere that Eric is bad… so I actually think this could be her strategy to divert the attention. Just hope to be wrong…)

MAS — the idea of TB portraying the berserkers as werewolf warriors is really interesting. The casting sides for Ep 2, Beautifully Broken, describe a WWII flashback and a “were-bitch” who speaks German who transforms in front of an American GI. She appears weak and helpless but is anything but — maybe the Nazis are using them as weapons. If the weres are used as warriors, it would make sense that they’d be a part of the major historical conflicts. If these packs are aligned and have been so for centuries, perhaps the were or weres in this flashback are part of the pack responsible for Ulfrick’s death?

I read a recent interview with AS in which he talked about enjoying playing a 1000 year-old character and, to paraphrase, the ability to insert that character into different historical periods. The description for Ep. 2 states that Eric remembers his past and Godric is supposed to appear in this episode as well. Perhaps they take part in the WWII flashback? Maybe Eric has already killed members of this pack? If these weres are used by one side or the other as uber-warriors in these battles, or even if they are just drawn to the major battles by their nature, it would be the perfect hunting place for a vampire seeking vengeance.

You just know that if weres really existed the Nazis totally would have used them. It reminds me of that Angel episode where he and Spike were on the WWII sub with the Nosferatu-looking Nazi vamp.

Oh, and if even a fraction of the wonderful speculation from this blog makes it into Season 3 I will be one happy camper!

So if RE is Fenrir, then someone has to fill the role of Tyr. When the Norse gods bound him until Ragnarok, he suspected that he was being tricked and would only stand still for the magic ribbon to be placed around him if one of them would put their hand in his mouth. Tyr volunteer knowing that he would lose his hand.

Remember what Sookie had to do to Calvin Norris’s hand? What if young vampire Eric goes after the vampire pack leader who killed him father? What if he effs it up and is about to pay with his life? What if his maker steps in and pays the price for keeping his child alive, his own hand? We know regrowing bone is one of the most painful things a vampire can experience.

Now that would be a maker you would kneel to. After that, Eric wouldn’t dare go after RE again as long as his maker was still alive. Now that he’s dead, Eric would be avenging both his fathers.

If this is how it plays out, Godric’s actions would almost be a mirror image of Appius’s who demanded the bones of Alexei to seed his own grave. One of Eric’s makers gives the ultimate price for his child and the other demands the ultimate price from his child.

You know, I am perplexed as to why we have not seen wider promotional efforts on the part of HBO. I thought by now we would be seeing a lot more mainstream coverage of the impending premiere, making full use of our favorite Swede. The advertising is much more muted than I thought it would be.

Strangely, in what promotions we do have (primarily web based) SM/Bill has def been relegated mostly to the background. What info we do have on his arc is even more cryptic than for the other characters and that is saying a lot. I doubt very much this is because they are trying to imply his plotline is insignificant or incidental. I think it means his storyline will pack a lot of shock value and they’re not going to give any of it away until the last minute.

I totally agree, Sunny. They’re trying to keep the details of that twist under wraps, I think.

I also think that– if this crappy photoshopped poster IS authentic (and really… we all remember the scary Gran photo from season 2… HBO has established difficulties with photoshop… LOL)– it’s interesting that they’ve waited this long to really start plugging the fact that Eric and Sookie will be getting A LOT closer this season.

They haven’t been exploiting the triangle business much in interviews and promos up until now– probably even less than they did last season. This leads me to believe that developments on that front may end up being way more shocking than any of us have speculated. And the Netflix summary certainly points to as much…

I frankly wouldn’t be surprised if Sookie tries to begin a sexual relationship with Eric directly upon learning of one or more of Bill’s deceits. But, it would be a rebound thing for Sookie and Eric won’t tolerate being used for long. He’ll back off and force her to deal with life as it is without the distraction of sex.

if this crappy photoshopped poster IS authentic (and really… we all remember the scary Gran photo from season 2… HBO has established difficulties with photoshop… LOL)

You may think I’m crazy, and I hope I can explain myself, but I think the crappy photoshop jobs are a metaphor because there was really no need at all to splice the images together when all they had to do was get a good make-up artist for Gran to make her look slightly younger, and then take a picture of her with the real young actresses who played Tara and Sookie.

But just like Bill’s cover story for being in BT, these images are not designed to be perfect or to completely fool the eye. They are transparently bad, so much so that we all scoff and laugh at the amateurishness of the manipulations. When you think about it, the audience should be laughing and scoffing at Bill’s over-dramatic seduction of Sookie and her falling for it hook, line and sinker.

And just to add, and forgive my crudeness, but I think Eric is gonna fuck Yvetta and anyone else he can get hold of to avoid fucking Sookie. No way will he put himself in that position because it means trouble for a number of reasons, the queen being the main one and THIS is why “I can’t” go to Jackson with Sookie. And did you notice how disappointed she looked when he said that? I hope we’re going to see that expression from her on account of Eric’s sexual rejection quite a lot. 😀 (and I KNOW he’s not going to taste her, for more reasons than one)

Come on they didn’t even try to get the viking a decent wig in S1. Arlene’s wig was a Gwyneth Paltrow cast-off from Iron Man 1. And what about the clown make up on SM in S2. Kathy– Lorena, Isabel, Pam, and Nan Flanigan prove this false. They ARE capable of beautiful make-up, wardrobe, etc–Lorena’s flashbacks were especially authentic and lovely. If a character has bad hair, make-up, or wardrobe it is deliberate and says something about the character.

Now, I do think they overdid the pink eyeliner on Eric, but they HAD to downplay his beauty to a degree or nobody would have paid a bit of attention to Bill. LOLLL! As for Bill, his worsening appearance was foreshadowing his downfall.

With the men, one or two slip by looking good, but it’s pretty much uniformly bad.

Sunny, I’ve come to the conclusion that the makeup is “featured” so prominently because we are never intended to forget that we are watching actors who are metaphorically wearing masks. The bad mu jobs are the dramatic masks the ancient actors wore. This is also why the decor at Fangtasia includes a collection of masks. For S3 they have been brought together and arranged more prominently around the copy of The Last Supper. Everything is finally starting to come in to focus.

Very interesting Renee, maybe this also explains Eric’s darker hair. Not to look evil like some others think but just for viewers to see him in a whole new light period. In the first 2 seasons, his character at times took on the villain vampire role and others thought of him as always evil. So now we will see him completely changed, both in appearance and personality, it’s basically a whole new Eric.

Although, I believe this could’ve been achieved without changing his hair because his actions could’ve spoken for themselves. Also, hoping there is more behind this reason, a more logical explanation.

So, is it a coincidence that these changes in Eric have come occurred since Godric met the sun? What was it that Godric said to Eric on the rooftop that had to do with right and wrong? And, now Eric is wearing a ring around his neck, his hair color is changed and a there is a connection is developing between Sookie and Eric. In fact, Sookie drank Eric’s blood right about the time that Godric met the sun. And, we know that he is going to have vengeance during season 3.

Robin-I definitely think, Godric, is a big reason for this. I believe it’s also a big reason for a change in his relationship with Sookie. Before the rooftop scene and even before Sookie infiltrated the FOTS, I think Eric looked at her differently. Anytime he was around her, Bill, always did his protective play with “Sookie is mine” which only pushed Eric’s buttons and wanted to annoy Bill in return. We saw that Eric didn’t care much for humans. I think he was attracted to Sookie, curious and intrigued by her and saw she was different than other humans. But I think now that Sookie had helped Eric find Godric, he sees her as a more worthy human. Not only that but when you share a tragic moment together you do sort of bond. Sookie stayed with Godric so he wouldn’t die alone, which I think Eric appreciates. Plus, that might’ve been the only time Eric has ever showed such emotion, and Sookie was there to witness it.

I think now in S3, he is thankful to her, appreciates her kindness that she showed towards Godric. Which is why we probably hear him telling, Sookie, that her life is to valuable to throw away, which is probably something you wouldn’t hear eric tell another human before.

From the Old Norse name Eiríkr, derived from the elements ei “ever” and ríkr “ruler”.

Means “power of god”, derived from Old English god combined with ric “power, rule”.

Scandinavian From the Old Norse byname Úlfr meaning “wolf”.
(Looks like Ulfric would be Wolf Ruler or Power of the wolf. That could also identify him as a berserker.)

Yes, Dee. I’m hopeful that Eric’s hair will be part of his S3 disguise, but it could just be a change in perception. This is going on with Fangtasia. Have you compared the S2 & S3 sets? (I’ve got some pics on my website.) Are we to believe that Pam went upscale and redecorated after the tea cup humans left? I doubt it. I think it’s about how differently the same thing can be perceived at different times and by different people.

[I don’t believe they had to destroy his characteristic physical traits to convince us that something has changed in him. I didn’t even need convincing of that in the first place!]

I agree with you Tina. Because Eric is an Archetype. And when you mess an archetype, you’re making a very big and deep impact on the collective conciousness, because you’re completely changing the meaning of it…

[I’m hopeful that Eric’s hair will be part of his S3 disguise, but it could just be a change in perception.]

I hope it too, Renne, because if they’ll not reverse the hair color to the original one at the end, I will be really REALLY worried with the message they’ll want to send. Because you know that the real development and growth should be from dark to fair, not the other way around…

Unless, of course, they are attempting to marry his character with Godric’s… and the hair is somehow symbolizing that Eric has internalized some of Godric’s “essence” in the wake of his death. The son becomes the father, like the phoenix rising from the ashes, and all of that jazz. (A theme that could also carry over into Eric’s lamentation of his human father’s loss.)

Then again, considering Godric’s ultimate fate– and maybe that of his human father’s too– even this development could be a little worrisome. LOL.

Also, this idea may be supported by the similarity between the names Eric, Godric, and Ulfric. At the end of season 3, this trinity may somehow become one within Eric.

Maybe OT, but in looking for the meaning of the name Ulfric (I think the prefix “God” speaks for itself), I learned that “Ulf” evidently means “wolf” in old norse.

We’ve gleaned from spoilers that Russell has an “unconventional” relationship with the werewolves. I’m now very suspicious that Eric’s father (and possibly his death) figures into that somehow.

VikingLover, I wanted to respond to this from way ^^^up there someplace, lol:

I agree Sunny. Especially when we see Eric in the I Will Rise Up episode. He looked especially lovely in that ep. Actually, to me he looked beautiful in all of S2…but I’m biased.

I agree. Sometimes he was so beautifully lit he took my breath away. Something about the set and shape of his mouth..mmmmm, so purdy..anyway….other times he was lit so horribly I would get mad! But I realized this was deliberate and an example of how ‘naturally’ the all of the actors are lit and photo’d on TB in general. Most shows would only feature their actors under premium lighting and filming only from the most flattering angles. TB doesn’t do this but frames the actors with the intent of ‘humanizing’ them, flaws and all. It’s the same with the imperfect make-up and wardrobes on some of the characters. IRL, not everyone can walk around tricked out like they are on Gossip Girl. LOL!

And, as Renee pointed out elsewhere, when the make-up is heavy and the wardrobe too obvious it is to reference and remind the audience that these are, after all, actors wearing their masks.

I wonder if, among other things already mentioned, Sam’s mask-smashing was a clue TB would somehow break the 4th wall?

[In a storyline riddled with blanks, Sam’s minisode managed to fill in NOTHING.]

Well MAS… maybe the point is to show us the genius’s writer that is AB, and how much Sam’s role contributes to the story as a lead character…

        • 175 sunnynala
          May 18, 2010 at 3:51 pm

Sam is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. Or something. 😀

          • May 18, 2010 at 4:19 pm

I get the distinct feeling AB is screwing with the viewers. None of the so called minisodes have been terribly enlightening. Interesting to speculate about, but that’s it.
Colour me disappointed. The most recent promo has been the most interesting. The rest PFFFFT.

I dont think any of them will be, I think it was just to give us something to hold us over. The majority of viewers are not going to see the minisodes, so I think he doesn’t want to give anything important away because then most viewers won’t know about it.

I know, don’t get me wrong because I was really hoping we would find out something of importance too. But after the first miniep with Eric and Pam, I asked people I know who watch the show if they’ve seen it and none of them even knew about these.

            • May 18, 2010 at 4:49 pm

Sunny, I have a challenge for your great observations. You always say with Alan Ball you have to dig deep. Since we have seen a so-so poster campaign, not terribly interesting minisodes and now this obviously poor bus add, what does this add up to?
Are we to believe that even when we a fed dreck we come back for more?

              • 181 sunnynala
                May 18, 2010 at 6:19 pm

Well, it’s transparently bad as I said somewhere else about Gran’s bad photoshop pic. Maybe they are doing it to see how much attention we would pay to a campaign that is ultimately meaningless. Since the whole campaign is so web-centric I must say I think maybe they’re gauging the reactions of the ‘fandom’ and how much importance we put on trivialities or how much fakery we’re willling to put up with. Maybe it’s a slap in the face, IDK.

Most importantly, they’re not giving anything away of any importance. Not in the ads, the minisodes or the trailers. We squee over some contact between E/S and wonder what the heck Bill is up to, but we have no idea whatsoever of the context of any of it. The night of the were attack is obviously at least a day or two after Sookie runs to Fangtasia and Eric after Bill is taken. but what is “real” state of their relationship at this point? Is Bill living it up with Lorena in captivity or is he having flashbacks? We just don’t know anything and that tells me we’re in for some huge suprises. Joe said in an interview that they were going to ‘blow some minds’.

                  May 18, 2010 at 7:08 pm

LOL so very true, they know only a small percentage of fans are on the internet looking for spoilers and dissecting all of this info. Majority might see a poster and think “oh cool” and check out the date for the premiere of S3 and that is about it.

I agree, we’ve been getting a lot of info and some have even wondered why we are able to know so much. But I think with we know so little of what will happen. I will say that I do think there have been theories on here that have been spoken about that will be on the show. Comparing the books to spoilers to pick up on some things is easy but I think AB will take it to a whole different level and even those of us who have seen every spoiler, promo, trailer, set pics and so on, will still be very surprised by most of what happens on the show. That’s why we’ve been seeing so much info on S3 bc still doesn’t tell us much at all.

Look at just the were attack scene with E/S. We’ve seen two “waiting sucks” promo’s for it and seen it in a trailer and we still aren’t sure how it will actually play out. We even thought in the first trailer that when Alex said “are you going to invite me in” that he was in her doorway but we see he was on the other side of her porch, further from her door, although still close.

                • May 18, 2010 at 7:59 pm

Okay, now that DOES make a little more sense. The 3-D aspect could make the depth perception all screwy on a two dimensional image– which might explain why Eric’s hand and forearm look all out of proportion here.

Te, he, he! This is brilliant, and to my mind proves that those of us with TB conpiracy theories are on the money. What is the message Ball is sending? What you see is determined by how you are filtering the input data. Is the poster a hot mess or does everything fall in to place when you view it through a 3-Df ilter? Do you belive the story you think the originally s3 poster is telling or do you believe this one? Whether you are a BL or an EL determines what you make of each image.

He’s crossed the wires, hasn’t he? In the first one Bill and Eric are in a protective stance re: Sookie. In this one, both are in a possessive, jealous stance stance. Are both accurate? Neither one? Half of one is true and half the other is true? Which halves?

              May 18, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Wow, that is a very interesting way to look at this Sunny. Have we heard from anyone that has viewed this through a 3D filter yet? I would be interested to see how it appears. BTW, I noticed Eric is still wearing the ring in this picture.

              May 18, 2010 at 9:34 pm

Well I’m admittedly biased, but I think Eric’s appearance in this is decidedly more seductive than it is jealous or possessive. Another thing I noticed is that Sookie’s hand is visible in this picture, as opposed to the last one. And it’s pointed in ERIC’S direction. (To say nothing of her open legs. LOL.)

Bill’s body language is unequivocally jealous and possessive though, as he grips her to him, as opposed to her just languidly lying there against him. It’s a significant difference… and a slightly off-putting one, as well.

I’m going for a walk in Times Square on my way home tonight. I tried to look down Times Square last night to see if I could spot a big one, but I was walking uptown, so too far away. I’m guessing it’s on the building with the New Year’s Eve ball. Am I right? I did see a double decker bus with the whole cast poster on it. But the sidewalk posters aren’t up like last year yet. I’ll get off the subway @ 42 instead today. I could see it was on the east side of the Times building, I could see AP’s leg, but I couldn’t tell if it was just 3 of them or all of them.
