Promo Poster #9

I’m still waiting to be impressed here.

The further into this campaign we get, the harder these posters suck. I don’t criticise for the sake of it and I will always give credit where it’s due.

But these posters are LAME.

They should have done half as many and actually put some thought into them.

Can we move onto the character promos soon? When are they coming out, anyway?

Yeah, I agree. They’re definitely not as impressive as I thought they would be.

I hope we get a Eric/Sookie promo this year.

I wonder if they will have a Bill-Sookie-Eric poster as a part of the character poster series.

Holy crap, is that stupid. Aren’t these posters supposed to have something to do with the series?

I agree, they’ve gone back to this well way too much for my liking. The only ones I’ve really liked were the “Cup of Joe” and “VILF”. I liked the Sam one purely from a design perspective — it reminded me a little bit of one of those old Victorian diagram charts. 12 of these is definitely too much. I’m also totally ready for the character promos to start. Wonder if they’ll do something similar to last season with the Dylan song?

I don’t know, I actually this one. I also liked VILF and Cup of Joe.

I don’t get it, really. Eric used the “night cap” thing in LDID but as far as I recall I was never used on the show. For me it simply looks kinda dumb. It’s not funny, clever or provocative. Or is there something I’m missing?

As underwhelming as this ad campaign has been, this one at least is picking up on the theme from the cast poster. There is a lot of Christian symbolism, especially Catholic symbolism here. To begin with, the blood is on an altar stone, not a tombstone. On the right side, three arrows point north or heavenward. The cross on that side stands straight and tall while the tombstone is falling over indicating that with the sacrifice of his blood Jesus has brought life to the dead. The left side is barren with only a small cross faintly outlined in the background. I read this as a reflection on false religion. It can look the same and promise the same thing, but ulimately it is barren, not life giving. The moon symbolizes Christ because his purpose is to reflect the glory of the father. (Unlike FOTS.) He is also the light in the darkness, and ultimately the one who will put a “cap” on the night and end all darkness. The Chinese characters read ‘Real Blood.’ For Protestants, communion is symbolic, but Catholics believe they are consuming the real blood of Jesus.

All this fits with Eric’s allegoricall identity as Christ, and it fits with the alcemical identity as the Moon King.

Ha. Renee, you and I really are twins. I just made a comment on the ‘just sayin” thread: “A copy of the original is never perfect”, in reference specifically to Bill and Eric’s jackets, but of course I mean the metaphor can be stretched to include an infinite number of things.

This is the most glorious product placement I have ever seen, -now I can’t resist spending 25 bucks on grapefruit juice!

I agree…these are all shameless plugs for that True Blood drink that is out…I’m not interested in drinks…I’m interested in tall blong viking pictures with arm porn.

Yep, totally lame! I mean the first one or two were ok, but enough already. Come up with something new. Thank God for the promo clips, or how would anybody be excited for the new season from these totally inane ads! How do I get a job at HBO advertising? They must hire anyone off the street!

Me, too. But every time we see these posters, whether we like them or not, we think of the show, which reminds us (as if we needed any reminding) about the pretty Viking, and it reminds us that we want to see more of the pretty Viking, so we want to see more of the show, so we are looking forward to it and will make a point of watching. Not that Viking addicts need the posters to put that those thoughts in our minds, but the frequent issue of new posters and minisodes and promos for minisodes keep the show at the forefront of our minds and have us talking about it. So the campaign is working.

At least this is one of those which attracts your gaze if you see them in the street… This reminds me of the campaign (at least in Spain) for “the daybreakers”, you didn’t realise they were from a movie… But they were much more beautiful and shocking (when you found that wasn’t a normal bar, or coffee or waittress, lol).
In the end, adds are done to catch your eyes and give you the name of the product, not to give other information. I remember one add on tv from BMW that was just the screen going on the grey lines and the buzz as sound, you thought something had happened to the tv until you saw the logo of the car brand… I thought it was great because even if you weren’t watching the tv or in the same room, when you heard that, you had to go to see what was happenning, lol.
And of course, it’s cheaper… XD

I think this one is… cute. That’s all. I hope they’ll release some character promo posters, though. It’s about time.

Me too! I’m surprised they haven’t yet. Does anyone know when they started to release the character promos last year? How close to the start of the season were they?

  11. May 19, 2010 at 11:06 pm

I feel it’s like there’s something I’m missing that would make this really great – although there’s nothing there to miss. Almost all of these posters could be interesting but there’s nothing supporting the catch that interests you. It’s like someone saying, “Hey, you wanna hear something really funny?” and then they just walk away.

    • May 19, 2010 at 11:08 pm

Also, in my brain, I just got a flash of something that COULD’VE been rather cool: a picture of Yvetta, with a hat pulled half down over her eyes, giving a sexy look to the camera – “Night Cap”. Or something.

At least it makes better sense with the context of the show…

        May 20, 2010 at 12:18 am

i was thinking the same thing, only perhaps with Sookie, i have an ultra hate-on for Yvetta.

        • May 20, 2010 at 2:28 am

Well, me too LOL That whole story line makes me feel a bit…hmm…less than enthralled. However, I do just kind of view her as a temporary blood donor, so in my mind she can be represented as a night cap – satisfies you for the moment but it’s no comparision to taking your time with a much more special beverage a la Sookie.

Makes me sound like an alcoholic, haha. Poor Sook…

          • May 20, 2010 at 5:40 am

That would be really great! Less obvious and very intriguing! And maybe she could have some fang marks on her neck or all over the body, just to make things clear…

    just few things..
1-Whete the hell are single’s characters promo?!?!
    2-I want a Sookie-Beehl-Eric photo and promo
3-i would really appreciate a Sookie/Eric promo or photos but miracles are very rare but not impossible actually!!!

C’mon Ball i’m tired to wait!!!!

i think the bottle should be the shape of a decapitated person, not really mainstreaming though

  14. May 20, 2010 at 12:41 am

if the intention is actually to sell these posters, they’re doin’ it all wrong!

The moon is the background and also is parallel to the bottleneck and above. So perhaps the objective is to suggest that the Werewolves are the “capping” of the nights… meaning that they are completing the nights at TB. Also, it could be refering to the werewolves using V, because it’s known that “night caps”usually contain alcohol… (V=drug alcohol=drug)

It could be suggesting, as Renne said early today, that Eric also could had been a werewolf.

Meh. I don’t think the posters have any significance at all. Last year’s fake ads had nothing to do with S2. They were just clever. Unlike this season. Meaningless and not funny at all, aside from “Cup of Joe,” which I thought was hilarious when I first saw it.

Here is a video about HBO shows, they show them filming some TB scenes. Mostly things we’ve seen though, but in case anybody wants to see:

I actually kinda like this one. What with trippy looking moon in the backdrop and the bottle of TB up front. You got your representation for weres (moon), vamps (tb) and Bon Temp (trees framing it all).

I like this one better than the last one with the bandaid for vamp bite.

Of course, it sure as heck does not replace a certain blond viking that we are all dying to see.

Keep counting down those days!! Can’t wait.

HBO is dumbing it down, down, down – cause you know it’s all ’bout the money….dum dum duh dee dum dum*…we have it, they want it. Maybe it’s just that easy.

Sometimes I get the distinct feeling they’ve given up. I WANT to feel good about True Blood, but it’s getting harder every day with the sloppy promos, the pushing of the merchandise and the wtf is this for?-comics…le sigh. Le sigh indeed.

(*This is a reference to the old hit song “All about the money” with Meja from 1998.)

I really liked the eight poster. The “Bewere” one. I liked the play on the word “beware” with the yellow eyrs in the background. I would actually buy this if it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg fof shipping. Oh, and VILF was pretty awesome too.

I’m not too fussed about the posters- some are better than others. As long as they’ve put enough time, effort and dosh into the actual Season, I’ll be a happy lady!
